hello all

I am 41 years of age and have been having horrible period pains constantly for approx 8 months and irregular periods for 3-4 years,i think this was affected by my total thyroidectomy operation a few years back.
Anyway I had an internal scan and it showed up lots of small fibroids in my womb not sure of the exact type or the exact location,so i went to see a consultant at James cook university hospital who was ver matter of fact and expected me to give her my answer there and then which of course i copuldnt do as its a huge thing to think about.
I dont want a coil fitted as this will not get trid of the fibroids that is causing the pain and making me anemic and you have to have this done again within 5 years,i dont really fancy being microwaved from inside either,so the only real option is a hysterectomy. My problem is I think i have read far to much into what can go wrong etc and its become so stressfull and making myself ill with worry.I had a bad time with anesthetic with my las t op and it was only supposed to take 1.5 hours and i was in theatre for 4.5 so now i am worrying myself sick. When my mam was in her mid 40's she had to have a hysterectomy because on of these begnin tumours turned huge she had an epidural because of anasthetic problems, please any advice down to earth and honest would be so much appreciated, thanks so much for taking the time to read this thred Smile

So the only option they gave you was surgery? Personally, if it were me, I would consider other options before I would take that drastic step which cannot be reversed. There are doctors out there who specialize in fibroids and do not necessarily always advocate surgery as the best option. You should look for one on the web or ask at other area hospitals or even check the fibroid websites. Do some research on the web and learn about the other alternative treatments out there. There are many. Some people have had a lot of success with them. My cousin had a lot of success with supplements and accupuncture. I know that fibroids need estrogen to grow so do not take extra estrogen, even in food forms such as soy. Soy will make fibroids worse. Ask about the medications you are taking and why. I also know that some people have had success in reducing and even eliminating fibroids with progesterone. Progesterone is the opposite of estrogen so it counteracts estrogen in the body thus reducing or eliminating fibroids. These are just some examples but there are a lot of different options out there. You are not solely limited to surgery unless that is what you want.

I had fibroids in the womb & also a cyst on one of my ovaries.

I was 41 years old & had a full hysterectomy apart from leaving me with one ovary everything was taken. Apart from the recovery I have never looked back. I wanted rid of all the potential problems & I am. I am now 50 years old and have just started going through my menopause.

I think you have to really look at all the options as everyone is diffarent. I can only say how I felt at the time. I came through it with no problems and felt wonderful only a few weeks into my hysterectomy. It worked for me, that's not to say everyone is happy with a hysterectomy. I never did much reading into it, I trusted my doctors and went for it.

If you feel you have read enough about it, go and have a chat with your health care providers see what they say.

Hope this helps a little.

Kathy

Total Hystorectomy
I am 45 years old and am 8 days past my total hystorectomy and I feel really good. My period last month was very painful, a kind of pain I have never had before so I went to the emergency room and the wonderful doctors there ran every test known and found a fybroid in my uterus, I was admitted to the hospital and told the next day that it had grown to the size of a 14 to 16 oz. fetus and that it would have to come out. I decided to hopefully keep my ovaries and told the Dr. that I would leave that up to him, that when he got in there and they didn't look good to go ahead and take them, well he did take them, they were in bad shape, I asked the Dr. to make a picture of this thing they took out and he did, I now have a pic of this, well needless to say I am doing great, I came home 2 days after my surgery and have been sore and uncomfortable the first few days home but getting better each day, so far I think that it was one of the best decissions made. I know we all differ in so many ways but I do hope that if you have any doubts to please, please go ahead and have this done. Good Luck and Better Health!!! Janie F.
