Q: Fever and stomach pains

My son had some stomach issues a month ago...sever pain right lower side, cried from pain and if I touched the area, as well as ride to doctors office (every time I hit a bump). He'd run a fever for a couple days. As soon as doctor saw him, he suspected appendicitis. After an evaluation, he said he wasn't so sure because the pain was movable and it would have been harder near the appendicitis. He sent him home and he did recover over the next 48 hours. Now, a month later he has the same symptoms except with diarrhea. Fever of 102.5 and abdominal pain. What's going on? He's almost 8 years old and this is crazy to be happening once a month and then he's wiped for 5 days. There's no common food that we can think of and I wouldn't think it would cause a fever anyhow. Any thoughts?

Have him checked again. Despite how common it is, doctors sometimes have trouble diagnosing appendicitis. Did they do a blood test or a urine test to check for infection (white blood cell count), an abdominal ultrasound, an x-ray, or a ct scan? If not, ask for further testing to check for appendicitis. Some of the tests also may indicate if there is a Urinary Tract infection or a kidney stone. It also may be a digestive problem, since some of the symptoms are pointing that way.

If this doctor won't listen, take him to another one, to the ER, or a urgent care clinic.

I hope they find out what's wrong with him very soon.

Last night his temp shot up to 103.5, this morning it was 96.1. Again, today temp shot up to 103.9 and is now 95.1. He's going back to doctor tomorrow, as this is all making me very uneasy.

I know this may be a dumb question, but you aren't taking it after he's eaten or drank anything, right? 95.1 sounds really low. He didn't take a drink of water or something, did he?

It's crazy isn't it? But no, he didn't drink anything. He sometimes runs in the 96 area. I just can't believe it's not an issue that his temperature is fluctuating 8 or 9 degrees everyday. I did bring him back today and WBC was 10, hence the "virus" answer and diagnosis of gastroenteritis. No u/s or ct ordered. Fever of 102 today (day 6). My pediatricians have always been very good with my kids and I hate to doubt them, but I have some serious doubts on this one...I really think it's chronic appendicitis.

You have to trust your instincts and keep following up on this, even getting a second-opinion. Even the best doctors miss things and make mistakes. Don't be afraid to ask questions and push for more tests.

When his temperature gets high, do you give him any pills like Ibuprofen or Tylenol for it? Do you give him a cool bath?
