Q: Feet losing sensation
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 14th, 2009
For nearly 2 years the toes on both feet have been gradually losing sensation, beginning at base and now nearly to tips. No diabetes, blood work excellent, lot of exercise, no B12 deficiency. MD & neurologist cannot find cause. I've assumed it's the results of 10 years of step aerobics, bare-footed, mostly on toes. Bought good shoes for workout, but condition continues to worsen. Any ideas? Much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to eHealth Forum!

Numbness of toes can be due to several factors. Some have been ruled out in your case (No diabetes, blood work excellent, lot of exercise, no B12 deficiency). You mention about doing step aerobics on bare toes. This could have resulted in tarsal tunnel syndrome which causes compression of the tibial nerve at the ankle. Compression of foot, continuous use of tight footwear, foot injury, and peroneal nerve irritation are some of the other local causes.

Degenerative disc disease and sciatica are the other causes. This would need a MRI of the lumbo-sacral spine. Leprosy (rare), peripheral neuropathy (diabetes ruled out but hypothyroidism should be checked), vaculitis and Raynaud’s phenomenon are a few other causes.

Discuss these possibilities with your doctor (preferably a neurologist or a sports injury specialist). It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Take care!
