Well, I was searching for my own reasons about hands feeling large (my issue is slightly different they feel more stiff than large) when I came across this discussion and I am amazed! All I can think of is the lyrics to Pink Floyd's song "Comfortably Numb" that go: "When I was a child I had a fever/ My hands felt just like two balloons/ Now I've got that feeling once again/ I can't explain, you would not understand" I have always loved those lines because they are so vivid, and here I come across this discussion! So strange!
Strange indeed, kailur! It's as if the sensory equivalent of an audio equalizer gets temporarily reset so that one part of the "body image" gets amplified or de-inhibited. Perhaps the "large hand" sensation is simply the result of having so many neurons in the hands.
I am so glad to hear others have had this! I usually have this wake me up at night, during periods of stress (and heat!!??). The first time I had it in my teens I was having a nightmare with a feeling of being completely overwhelmed and about to die (don't want to sound dramatic, but that is how bad the fear was). I woke up from the nightmare with a feeling of huge hands, sometimes the feeling of a swollen tongue, even though both were fine. I am not sure whether it was the fear, but time was very slowed down, and my hearing was incredibly sensitive. Probably only took 20 minutes to go away, but felt like hours. The weirdest thing was the feeling that THIS HAD HAPPENED BEFORE, and at a really young age - maybe before talking age? Very strong memories felt like they were being activated. Scared the living hell out of me, and I told no one for years while it happened. Told a doctor once who looking at me like an interesting tray of agar and said it was probably temporal lobe epilepsy. But there is no history in the family, and now out of my twenties it has only happened twice. I can feel it coming on, can anyone else? I can pretty much stop it by calming down (breathing slow, having a cool shower). Sorry for the long post, I have been searching the internet for years for some sign I was not alone!!!
You are certainly not alone, picnicrug. I love that there are others who have not only experienced this, but are curious and articulate enough to wonder at and discuss it.
Do a web search for "sensory motor homunculi" (without the quotes). Look at some of the images that turn up, and see if they remind you of anything!
I imagine that the sensations we are discussing here occur when there is a temporary lapse in the neural mechanism that "maps" the wildly uneven distribution of sensory and motor neurons onto a spatially realistic body image. Nothing to worry about, but it's marvelous to consider that this mechanism is just one of many that our nervous system uses to calibrate our experience of the world around us.
Yup, me too, I get the large hands sensation...only when I lie face down clutching a pillow before falling asleep. Im 50, male and have only felt this for the last four years or so. Never scared of it... it's kind of a trip, and I think its related to temporary circulation issues in my forearms. I also had severe delirious flu related fevers in my youth but never felt the big forarms till recently, so no thumbs up on the connection here...
I have just discovered the name of this tonight, I have been wondering what this big hands feeling was since I was 6 (now 25)! Think what I have is Alice in wonderland syndrome.
My question to you guys is about sound perception. At around the sane time the big hands/body thing started at 6 years old, I also started hearing sound, particularly voices, differently. Everything sounds almost like a musical octave or key lower and slower too. I know that it's in my head because even my own voice sounds lower and slower. It lasts for up to about half an hour at a time and doesn't happen very often, I'd say only 20 or so times since I was 6.It happens in the day, whereas the large body stuff happens at night, before I fall asleep.
Ooh, I looked up the sound perception thing before and didn't find anything. One day when I was extremely dehydrated from drinking alcohol the day before, everything sounded slightly higher pitched, rather than lower. I know it was the dehydration responsible because after I drank a couple of glasses of water, less than ten minutes passed before my hearing returned to normal.
Oh god.. I had this feeling and it could not give me a rest for a while. I felt my thumbs were huge, especially when I was holding hands (fists) in my pockets. I really thought I am getting mental and nobody could understand what I was talking about. I felt like I new this feeling from the past, but I could not remember when and it freaked me out even more. But now it makes sense. I probably had it in childhood, as all the people here.. no I am in my twenties. after all the comments here I could also agree there's something to do with stress..
I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY. The first time I felt this sensation was when I was 6yo, and I remember having a fever. My hands felt like they were huge. Moving my hands makes the sensation subside. The entire episode only lasts for a few minutes. I occasionally still get this sensation as an adult, at the weirdest times, for no apparent reason. Most of the time it affects my hands, rarely my feet or head. I seriously thought I was crazy. Even if I never know what causes this, it makes me feel better just knowing I am not the only one who has this sensation.
I get this feeling sometimes when I pray, mostly that my hands are uncomfortably large. I usually have to wiggle my fingers or open my eyes to get rid of the feeling. I don't even think I need to look at my hands, just reconnect with my environment visually. Does this happen to anyone else?
I've done some internet searching and wonder if it has to do with the functioning of the parietal lobe. The parietal lobe is apparently involved in giving you a sense of your body's proportions. Prayer can take me into a state of consciousness that might be physiologically similar to the state between being awake and asleep, and maybe parietal lobe functioning is altered. Although I never remember having this sensation due to a fever, others in this discussion have mentioned it a lot. Could a fever perhaps also cause the parietal lobe to function differently??
I would love to hear what some neuro-psychologists out there think as I am just a praying and very inquisitive "layperson"!
Almost comforting to see these posts. Although these feelings have never scared me I have wondered since childhood what is causing this. It has always happened when falling asleep. Unsure of fever were associated in childhood or not. The only difference is it did not only effect my hands. Sometimes it would be my whole body feeling extremely huge, like I was bigger than my room. Or other times it would switch to me being very small. When the feeling would become too intense I would open my eyes and see that I was still the same. This happened again tonight. Glad I found this formum. Good to know I'm not the only one. Since this post is old maybe someone still care or can elaborate. Thanks and sweet dreams
I first had this during an acute illness in my teens. Lately it has resurfaced and I'm in my mid 40's. Not sure what has brought it on but I have dreams my hands and fingers are large but my arms are like sticks and very lightweight. It is so bizarre that I awake trying to get rid of the feeling. Sometimes my legs feel the same way but mostly it's my hands. I have never told anyone about this but now I intend to tell my doctor a's I have seizures and see it could be linked to epilepsy. They have been trying to find a reason for the seizures this may be a connection. I was really surprised to see others had this and it was not just some weird recurring nightmare! Thanks to all post for information! Oh and my husband has Alice and wonderland I know I don't have that we saw that on tv and he declared he thought that happened to everyone lol. If he looks at an object to long his vision zooms in on it and everything else gets small and that object gets huge! That is a totally different experience to what I have my body and environment looks fine just feels huge!
I too have had this strange hand sensation, the large hands, and the small pin like hands. Only tonight did i find someone who had exactly the same feeling, surprisingly my uncle! So we decided to google it tonight...
This used to happen to me when i had a high temperature, and i would get the feeling that it was going to happen as i was getting into bed, but i used to get 'night terrors' to go with it!
The 'night terrors' i would run around the house, hitting things, crying, shouting and talking. My mother tells me about a time i apparently tried to climb out of a window, but i don't remember any of it, i just remember the feeling of coming out of it, and having large/small hands, and everything feeling so far away.
I remember the feeling so well... but, did anyone ever get the feeling of everything being so very far away aswel?
Myself and my uncle both said that we would get the feeling of having very large hands, and imagining if we were picking something up, it would be ridiculously small like a pin. Although, saying that, i used to get the feeling of my hands being very small too. The feeling of panic, because it was so real, yet part of you knew it wasn't, until you came out of it!
Such a bizarre thing to find that other people have felt this too, as myself and my uncle have been thinking it was only us!! My uncle said that he stopped having the feelings at about the age of 17, and that it might be something to grow out of... but my latest was a month ago and im 21...
I am so excited to know others can describe this weird sensation so accurately It started during childhood when I had a fever and I am now 45 and it recurs now and again Sometimes it is accompanied by a strange smell/taste not sure
tooo happy you mentioned the strange smell/taste. just had an episode where my body was going in and out of being huge and then really small. sometimes it even felt like I was made of sticks and a balloon body around it. I used to get these sensations whenever I had a fever and they were always accompanied by a strange indescribable yet not that unpleasant smell along with the taste or feeling of like a rough papertowel in mouth. I'm glad these are similar to mine I never knew other people felt this
Wow, I'm also relieved to read so many others have had this sensation. I've had these since I can remember. Hands, Arms, Legs usually. Esp. legs. Sometimes I feel like I'm remebering my birth if anyone can relate to that. Like I'm being forced/squeezed through fat legs. I get dizziness and pulsating/ throbbing sensations in my head and body. When it's really strong I get pins and needle sensations as well. Also auditory - sometimes even hear voices. Nothing distiguishable, just random gibberish. Once I was walking home from school about 14yrs old and had an extremely strong episode. Body sensations voices pins and needles - the whole bit. Scared the crap outa me. I was crying.
Since then I've experimented with hallucinogens and have had a fascination with them because of the similar feelings. It all makes sense now. I'm an artist and much of my artwork esp. sculptures refelcs distorted body parts. I never realized how much this has affected my life until now.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
I also associate these episodes with stress and lack of sleep. Esp. lack of sleep/tiredness. When I was in art school staying up all night working on assignments I would get these feelings. That's usually when I would get the auditory hallucinations. That's when I knew I pushed myself too far and it was time to get some sleep. Kinda like now. G-night.
hi, i had the large hands and feet but they looked normal when i was a child around 6 to 8 years old. I also hallucinated a little this was when i was unwell, i recently experienced it again the other night when i was trying to get to sleep. I am 7 months pregnant and haven't been sleeping well, It makes me feel really weird and i get a dry cotton like feeling in the back of my throat and when i touch things they feel very small i think this could be related to lack of sleep thanks.
remember the pink floyd song? "comfortably numb"?? "when i was a child i had a fever...my hands felt just like two balloons...now i have this feeling once again....i cannot explain, you would not understand....this is not how i am..." how freaky is that?? almost all of you refer to fevers in correlation with this. i'm trying to find out if anyone has had a "sleeve-like" tightening around the hand/wrist area. can't find anything on that so far.
I have had this big hands feeling a few times in my life followed by the sensation that my fingers being like pins. Whenever I get it my hands get extremely heavy. The last time I got it however this spread to my arms legs and the rest of my body which made me paralysed. I was lying in bed beside my wife at the time and was telling her what was going on as it happened. She freaked... I was paralysed for about 30 seconds. I told my GP and my Neurologist about the event who both shrugged their shoulders.
