Q: Feeling ill on no-fat diet
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 21st, 2009
I am a 25 year old female. In the last month I have had two “gallbladder attacks”, where my stomach had terrible clenching pain and I was getting cold sweats and nausea. But never after eating fatty food, which was odd. Went to the Dr, had blood work done, showed elevated liver enzymes (in the 170s for both) and an ultrasound that showed a few stones, some of decent sizes. Dr put me on a low-fat diet. As the week went on it seemed nothing I could eat would keep me from feeling sick and bloated. I cut out all the fat. I eat and feel like I just had thanksgiving dinner. And I am always “burping” food up into my mouth after I eat. Gross, I know. Had an upper GI and it came back fine. So my Dr wants to take out of gallbladder, but I have read so many horror stories about people still being sick after, and having diarrhea for the rest of their lives. Should I be feeling so ill on a no-fat diet if it is my gallbladder? Should I have a HIDA scan to test it? Could it be something else?

Unfortunately, abdominal pain from gallstones does not always follow eating. As I don't have access to your full evaluation, I cannot tell you if your symptoms are coming from your gallstones or not. However, based upon the information that you have provided, it is certainly possible that your symptoms, and your abnormal liver tests, could be caused by your gallstones. Furthermore, if your liver tests suggest blockage of the main bile duct by a gallstome, then this can be a life-threatening complication of gallstones.
