Today I used the First Response pregnancy test. I think my test was faulty or I messed up. You know how you are to see || for positive or | for negative? I got a negative line, but then had this really weird smudge looking line...almost like smudged dye...it did not look anything like a positive is supposed to look like, even a faint positive, but rather looked like this: -|. The horizontal line represents the smudge. It was not a line really, but rather just smeared dye running perpendicular to the negative line(or that is what it looked like). Now I am freaking out. If I take another urine test tomorrow morning and use first morning urine (it has been 4 weeks past my period...yes, I had my period, but I wanted to make sure that it was actually my period and not something else), can I trust the result, assuming I perform the test correctly? Please help me. I am scared.

I took one the next morning (yesterday), and it turned out clearly negative. I also got my period today. Can I rest assured that this was just a messed up result? I just want to make sure there is no way it was a positive. I also took a test before the messed up one and got another negative.

Thank you. I just get really paranoid. There is no way that horizontal line could have been an flipped positive, right? I just messed up the test?

I just got freaked out because I saw on Yahoo! Answers that some people were responding to someone with a similar problem saying that the window could have been accidentally flipped in the test. I heard from someone reliable that this is impossible for a First Response Pregnancy test, as both lines would have been flipped if it was put in wrong. There are not two separate windows for that test, so I am assuming they are right about both lines needing to be flipped in that case. I plan on testing yet again just to make sure, but I am bleeding right now (hopefully from my period). If I test next week, when I am no longer bleeding, should I receive a reliable answer?

No, the dye in the test was probably just a little off.
Getting your period is also a good indication that you're not pregnant.

Thank you Very Happy! I hate to keep dwelling on this and annoying everyone, especially you, Maddie, but are you quite sure about this? I just am really scared by the fact that I saw two lines, even though one was facing the complete wrong way, and I ruined it probably by not being patient and urinating on it twice Rolling Eyes. The fact that I did not see any another vertical line besides the negative/control line should be reassuring and the fact that I got a negative yesterday morning Question

Ugh. I had the perfect site to send you to, but apparently it's down. Sad I'll have to find another.

Anyways, the chances of that happening are... basically zero. And Yahoo answers doesn't mean its right. Test again if it will make you feel better, but I don't think it's an issue.

Thank you! I think I know exactly which site you mean, and yeah, I tried to get on it earlier and noticed it was down Sad.

How long after I am done bleeding will I need to wait to test and get a reliable answer? Once I am no longer bleeding, will I be safe to test again, or should I wait a certain number of days/weeks?

Oh, you don't need to wait.

Prengnacy tests look for a certain hormone that is only associated with pregnancy. You're good to test!

And I was talking about peeonastick.com, what website are you talkin about?

That site as well! I remember seeing that site before and that they had pictures of tests, and I really wanted to look at them and see if anyone got something similar as to what I did. Even though my other one was negative, I keep thinking about how I had that messed up result, and it just drives me insane. I just wish I knew for sure so that I didn't have to continue worrying myself sick. I know I sound so stupid Sad. And thank you very much for helping me.

I don't think you have much to worry about. You would have triggered another positive if you were actually pregnant-- and you certainly wouldn't be getting your period.
