Q: False positive test results
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 20th, 2009
i had an HIV test before i was pregnant and when i got pregnant both were negative. i've only been with one man who i've been with for almost 3 years. he has only been with one person as well(me) and he swears he hasn't cheated. i went to the dr. last week for swollen lymph nodes and she gave me an antibiotic and it made it go down a little but she tested me for HIV and it came back positive. but, the other things on the paper were negative and she said she's never seen that before she said maybe the virus is too early to detect everything positive or its a mix up. i've read that just having a baby or flu vaccine or hepatitus b shots can make it come up hiv and i had a flu shot when i was pregnant and a hepatitus b shot the day i left the hospital after giving birth. she took more blood to do another test and i get my results monday. i've ready these false positives are started to become common..how common are they really?

Every test might give false positive results. False positive results are results that confirm, but actually are not correct according to the real condition. Every manufacturer determines the rate of false positive results for their own brand of tests. They also try to decrease that rate as much as possible.
You might want to get information about the exact brand of the test used and then search for data from the manufacturer.
