Q: Factor 5 Leiden information

I noticed some have written on Factor 5 leiden. I am wondering if anyone knows more information on the hereditary side of it.....My Mother tells me that she does not have it however, I do know that her 2 sisters have it, as well as we believe her Mother did.
Is it possible for my Mother not to have it, and if so would that mean I do not have it either? Could I have it if she does not?
She said she was tested and it was negative.......

I am very concerned as I am trying to have a baby and would like to know ahead of time.

Blood disorders like Thromboembolic states, Factor V Leiden and Prothrombin mutation can be hereditary (genetic) or acquired. Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy increase the risk of blood clots, and the risk of experiencing complications is greatly increased in those who also smoke. The time before, during, and after pregnancy also increase the risk of clots.

If you suspect possible or future problems (And given your family's medical history) with Hypercoagulable states, you should definitely request a full round of diagnostic exams to confirm or exclude Factor V Leiden.
