Q: Facet tropisms and their treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 16th, 2009
I have had back problems since I was born and went to a chiropractor to see exactly what I had. He told me he found a birth defect which I already knew and told me what it was, but he rushed me out of there and didnt explain to me what it was exactly. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Facet tropism is when the angle of the facet joints in the vertebrae face a different direction than normal. Instead of them going parallel to your feet (if they were straight ahead) they can sometimes be angled out (as if your feet were pointing out). This causes abnormal movement and wear and tear at those joints, and can cause back pain.

This is a common finding on an x-ray. Chiropractic adjustments should help along with specific exercises to keep those joints and muscles moving in a fluid manner. Weight is a significant issue as well. Good Luck!
