I keep having extreme flank pain, wave
after wave, usually after I have been
lying down a couple of hours. The pain
seems to gradually let up after urination,
but begins building up again after Iie
down, thereby starting the process all
over again. It wakes me up all night a
couple of times a week, with sometimes
having to go urinate 4 or 5 times to
relieve the pain enough to sleep. The pain
is generally worse on the left side, and
will also hurt worse with a deep breath or
sudden movement. It peaks as I urinate
then slowly begins to subside. I can't
find out anything about this or anything
similar. Has this ever happened to someone
else? It has been going on for about 6 to
8 months off and on. It is frustrating
and I'm trying to avoid the doctors
offices especially since I can't find a
single site with anything similar.

Hi and welcome to ehealth
I highly suggest you make an appointment
with your doctor. I'm not a doctor but I
have had problems with my kidneys for a
very long time. It can be a variety of
things for example: kidney stones, UPJ
obstruction, infection, etc..
You really need to get some tests done
(ultrasound, blood and urine) to find out
the cause of your symptoms.
It sounds like a blockage but again I'm
not a doctor, I've been through this
before.
Sorry I couldn't offer more.
Please keep up posted.
Best wishes..

Welcome
Nobody likes to have to go to the Doctors,
but sometimes it is necessary. Google UPJ
obstruction and you might find some
similarities. Everyone is different and
some obstructions are in different
locations. The pain may be from the urine
backing up into your kidney. You should
get it checked. Let us know how you do.
Good Luck.

I am having the same problem here though I
usually only have to get up once a night.
The pain is really bad if I breathe too
deeply and it's in both sides of my back.
After urination it begins to go away. I'm
having an ultrasound on the 9th and am
worried it could be PKD. You really should
go to the doctor and have it checked out.
I hate to go but am tired of the pain,
it's been going on for a couple of years
now. I'll try to remember to post back and
let you know what they say.
Good luck!

I did see the doctor and had a CAT scan.
It showed nothing. He believes I have
Interstitial Cystitis. That's not really a
bad thing just a painful thing. Read up on
it -see what you think. Go to the
doctor!!
Best of luck!

IC is very painful and can become worse
over time.
You can post in the urinary and bladder
forum for more help on IC.
