I was informed my mom has the swine flu. My daughter(15) had spent the night with her on saturday and was with her all day on sunday. My mom began to feel extrememly sick on sunday and went to the doctor today(monday). I was wondering if the swine flu is really as bad as the media makes it out to be or not. Is it really contagious? How soon would a person begin to get symptoms if they were to get the swine flu? Any feed back would be appreciated.
Thank you

Swine Flu-Not as Bad as Other Flu I've Had
I work with kids who go to a private school where there has been lots of swine flu. I spoke to the school nurse there, too, who confirmed it - as well as my symptoms.

I can at least tell you that if what I have is swine flu, it is so much less agonizing than the ususal flu I get once in a blue moon. The symptoms with this one are a light headache, a moderate sore throat, a moderate fever for the first two days of illness and then tapering off/coming and going for a couple days after that and very little general achiness, if any. It differs from the other flu strains I've had in that the fever is either less severe or just doesn't last as long and there is no crazy nose running and mucous and coughing and muscle aches. I've had this for 7 days now and my last symptom seems to be post-nasal drip. The school nurse had relayed that the most contagious time is the 24 hour period before you start showing first signs of illness, but that the Bd. of Health suggests that you are contagious until about 5 to 7 days have passed and you no longer show symptoms. FYI, this flu is on the Jersey Shore, Monmouth County.
