I am 37 and wish to find out if I am fertile or not. I would appreciate advice as to where I start and if it is covered by the health system here or will I have to pay consultants etc. I am covered by Plan B in the vhi. Can anyone give me advice here? Where can I go, who should I see.

For many people, visiting a fertility specialist is the first step toward diagnosing possible problems. As a woman, the specialist will probably order a thyroid exam, examine hair patterns, complete a breast exam and a pelvic exam. f your doctor doesn't find indicators via this first exam, she will need to test for ovulation, ovarian function, and take a look at the reproductive organs via x-ray, sonogram, or laparoscopy. It's quite an investigative analysis!

It's easier for your partner to be tested first, as the test revolve around analysis of his sperm...which is a qualitative exam. In fact, the semen analysis is the single most important indicator of male fertility.

VHI has published some other information about fertility on their site. You can also access a nurse 24/7 by calling their CallSave network 1850 247 724 and to get information regarding the referral and diagnostic process!

How long have you been TTC (trying to conceive)?

Re: Rooted
Thats the thing, I am not in a relationship, I was for 4 years but we parted last year, he has no problem with sperm count as he ended up with an unplanned pergnancy (6 months along!) with the next person he dated after me! He & I left conception in the lap of the Gods while we were together as were both in our 30's but I never fell pregnant. We were not actively trying persay but due to that I now need to know for myself if I can conceive. I had a pregnancy when I was 19 which was terminated at the 13th week, I never had my 6 wks post op but did have regular smears after.
I had one year of irregular periods in my late 20's, bloods were taken and my G.P. said I had extrememly low oestrogen levels and that I was not ovulating at all but as I was'nt in a relationship at the time and with no guidance or advice to follow up the matter from my G.P I never had an investigation. I know now that this was probably the worst mistake I could have made but no point crying over that now. My cycle returned to normal and has been fine ever since, although I do have that unwanted hair on my neck signifying a hormonal imbalance. I need to know for peace of mind at this stage and if I am to embark on a potential new relationship in the future, I know age is not on my side but I'd like to at least have hope. Thanks for your reply. Reading over this sounds like a bit of a horror story!

I see. Love your avatar, by the way. Betty Boop is one of my favorites.

Well, if you suspect that there is trouble on your end, Id support you in following up. Just realize that the diagnostic process can take a while and be prepared for a battery of text and exams. Do you think that you want to conceive and carry a child via IVF and/or as a single mother? I ask b/c I was considering this option for a while. Also, what about adoption?

Thanks, I love Betty Boop & Peanuts charachters.
I have no concrete plans to conceive at the moment, I would just like to know my stsatus, I fear the worst at this point but a diagnosis would probably spur me along to making a decision. Adoption in Ireland is rare, I think only 2 Irish babies were put up for adoption in this country in the past 2-3 years, and even if a child became available, the selection process is very difficult to get through unless you started years ago. Adopting abroad would be my only option, costing thousands too but I would do it if the need arose, I know there are millions of children worldwide needing love and care. But that's not the issue at the moment. I guess I will make an appointment with my G.P. to get the ball rolling and start these tests.
