I'm 48, have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and have bled heavily during periods for years, hemorraging, actually. Since October '08 I have bled for 58 days straight and was precribed Norethindrone and it subsided a while. Its back and I have a lot of ovarian pain and heavy clotting for about 3 wks now. They have ruled out cysts, fibroids, etc. I'm weak, so much back pain and just miserable. Have become very discouraged as the only solution the Gyn offers is the Mirena IUD as she doesn't think I am a candidate for a hysterectomy due to diabetes. I worry about any more hormones in the Mirena because of my thyroid problem. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

i cant really answer your question because you stated that you have various health issues, so the doctor will treat you differently than me.
i can tell you my story and hopefully give you ideas to talk to your doctor about.
i started spotting on year ago, my primary care doctor sent me to a place that took blood work.
i found out i have cyst on my ovary.
i would spot for three weeks, then the next month im normal, then the next month i would bleed for three months very heavy with blood clots.
i had surgery done call hysteroscopy and d&c. i was told with all this irregular bleeding the lining of my uterus has thickened, so my doctor had to scrape it (d&c). they put me on the depo shot, but i was spotting for 1 1/2 months. so i was put on birth control pills and my periods are regular.
they did all the tests to rule out fibroids, cancer, infection, etc. so they dont know why i was bleeding like that so they call it dysfunctional uterine bleeding. i dont know what will happen if i get off the pills. i think i gained so much weight in a short amount of time and it trigger all of this.
dont let your doctor make all the suggestions, read up on what you have and make suggestion to them.
it took the doctors one year to figure out what's wrong with me.
