hi everyone. i was dating a guy for 4 years, all through college, and we recently broke up. i believe one reason behind it is that i believe he is an alcoholic. although his behavior did not change when he was drinking, he would drink 6 beers and about 1/4 of a bottle of captain morgan (w coke) 3-4 times per week (at night) on average, sometimes more days out of the week. i believe he suffers with depression; however, he denies it. based on the amount that he drinks, could he be an alcoholic?? i've tried to get him to stop for years now, and the longest he's been able to not drink was about a month. any input would be appreciated! thank you!!

There are indicators and levels which can help identify alcoholism according to amounts and types of alcohol consumed. When I was diagnosed as an alcoholic, I went to a psychologist and answered questions honestly about my consumption. A day later, when I met with the counselor again, he confirmed the diagnosis.

I'm not sure how you can help your Ex if he's in denial. What would you like to do?

That's healthy. Good for you to take some distance! Here's a quiz I found online.

The official A.A. line is that only the alcoholic can say whether or not s/he is an alcoholic. But I think that there are some real indicators, such as the ones you mentioned. Daily drinking and the inability to stop drinking are signs of alcoholism, for sure.
