Hi,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
There are no long term side effects documented. However since no form of birth control is 100% effective, you should look out for complications. The procedure is an office visit procedure taking about 35-45 minutes. You are usually fine after it within half a day.
The effects during or immediately after the procedure may include mild to moderate cramping, nausea/vomiting, dizziness/light-headedness, and bleeding/spotting. Other effects include: Perforation, expulsion, or other unsatisfactory location of the micro-insert, Pregnancy and increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, Pain, cramping, vaginal bleeding, menstrual pattern changes, light periods at first then longer, heavier periods lasting up to 6–8 weeks, Nausea/vomiting, Vasovagal response (fainting), Allergic reaction to the materials used during procedure.
The success of the procedure needs to be established by getting a HSG (hysterosalpingogram) done after 3 months of the procedure. Until then use back-up method of contraception (condoms, spermicide) for added protection.
Take care.

AI had the procedure done about a year and 1/2 ago and must say that I am happy with the process. I was out of it for most of the day due to the meds you are given for the procedure.

Also, please research the HSG that you have to get done. I have had to have it done 2 times now and have been informed that one tube is completely closed but the ohter is still slightly open.

I'm not complaining (this last HSG I had done was over a year ago -- I lost my insurance and could not afford to go back).

HOWEVER, do research the HSG -- it is extremely painful. All I was told was that I would have to have an X-ray done after 3 months.

Make sure you get all the facts. You may or may not completly close up. It may take more that 3 months which during that time you should practice safe sex.

Me, personally, I wish I would have just had the cut/tie procedure done. It would have been over and done with and I won't be wondering if I am completely closed up yet.

ALSO: I have had some sharp pains in my lower area where these are planted -- I don't know that they are from the implants -- but beware.

Essure
Hi, Dr. Madhumita Avinash Paul, have some concerns I have the essure and I just can not get this bacteria infection to go away. I have used the medicine correctly as prescribed but as soon as I finish the medicine it comes back. My reason for feeling as if the essure is the cause of it because i have not had problems with that tpe of infection but when I am pregnant. Can I get some kind of feedback....Thanks

I had the procedure done about a year and 1/2 ago and I haven't had had any severe side effects just some spotting between cycles that last about a week after my regular cycle. Just recently I noticed my cycle changing from light to heavier to very light spotting, which is what caused me to look for some info concerning any side effects. Overall I am happy with the process.

Essure
I just had this procedure done about 2 weeks ago. Since then I have body aches, headaches, and anxiety issues which I have never experienced. You said there are no long term side effects yet I have been reading up on many women who are having tons of ailments since having this procedure. Had I been told the possibility of any of these issues I would not have opted to do this.

Essure
I had the Essure procedure done in June of 09. 19 months later I STILL experiencing horrid cramps in my back and stomach. Hot flashes, diareha, headaches and PMS times 150. Just got back from the Dr today.. And he (the one whos never had a pierod) says there is no possible way that the essure could be causing these things.. blah blah blah is all I heard after that. Oh & a hysterectomy will probably be in my near future.... But as the good Dr says... He wants to leave the parts behind that are causing all the problems. Just dont get it. i paid $3000 to have the essure put it.. Who knows how much this next one will be. If I had known all these problems would occur I WOULD HAVE NEVER HAD IT DONE!!!! Ladies do your homework....

Essure issues
HI! I had my essure placed in the summer of 2008. By December of the same year, I started having constant low back aching pain which I rate as a 2/10 on the pain scale during my cycles. During the one year anniversary of having my Essure done, I complained to the Doctor about my low back pain which she dismissed due to no evidence of these symptoms in the Essure literature. As the months/years pass by, my low back pains have progressed in intensity and duration. I was getting low back pains every two weeks; during the time of ovulation and during my periods. However, my periods have never changed, I never bled any heavier or any longer than I normally would. By this time my pain has gotten to a 7/10 on a pain scale. I made an appointment at this time with my GYN because I was dreading what my pain would be like as each month goes by. In January 2011, I had an MRI of the lumbar spine and pelvic area to check for Essure placement and determining the source of my back pain. The results all came back normal. Recently, during mid-cycle, there are times when I couldn't sleep because I couldn't get comfortable. I have talked to my husband and primary care doctor about possibly getting the Essure removed. So, I went to my GYN doctor again, this time she tells me that having the Essure removed was possible but then I'll have to have my entire uterus removed as well. Right now, she wants to see if taking pills in the meantime would take away the pain, as well as scheduling an ultrasound of my uterus to see if there are any other reasons I was having these symptoms. She was thinking either I have endometriosis or adenomyosis. She then proceeds to tell me if I knew how many women have had the Essure procedure done. She said..."Thousands". Then she said, "Do you know how many of them came back with low back pain issues?"....."Just you!" I cried...and I cried....

Talk to your doc about getting a CT scan done. I know these are bad for you but then they can tell if it has migrated from the fallopian tube. I also had issues after having the procedure for 2 years, pain in right abdomen, diarrhea, back pain.Sometimes couldn't hardly walk.Went in had a colonoscopy, nothing there. Finally went in to a different OB/Gyn and said take them out, I don't care what you have to do, had a partial hysterectomy (sp?) and low and behold the right implant had migrated to my small intestine and decided to make it's home there. So they had to cut it out of the small intestine and I still have pain sometimes if I don't eat right or excercise to much especially sit ups, and it is in my right side and in my back. So if you do have it taken out and they can't find it make sure they find it! These things need to be taken off the market.

Essure Side Effects
I had the procedure done in November of 2010, In the beginning I did not have any pain whatsoever, It's now April 2011 (6 months later) and I'm beginning to have sharp pain in my stomach, nausea/vomiting, dizziness/light-headedness. While it's only been 6 months I'm thinking about having them removed if these symptoms persist.

I got the essure done september of 2009. During the first year everything was fine. Back in October my lower back starting hurting everyone said you may have pulled something. After 2 months my back stopped hurting i was happy again, Well tell my period came, i started having really bad pain and my period also lasted 2 weeks. Since then my periods are really bad last anywhere from 5 days to 15 something 16 days. Everyday i have really bad pain in my left side where the essure is. The essure is only in the left side the doctor said my right side was blocked 100% I had the test a month after having the essure put in and it was all 100% closed i was very happy. as of right now i have has so much wrong, i wish to this day i would have never go the essure done. I go to the doctor tuesday the same one that did it to see whats going on. If i have to beg and plead to have a historectomy i will. I dont want to have to live my life with pain anymore. I hope all us women get well real soon. I wish you all the best of luck and let every women you know that dont want anymore kids to never ever get essure. Good luck and god bless you all <3

Essure Procedure Experience
I had my Essure procedure done on 4/29/2011. That day I was a little sore. I did NOT experience headache or body aches or nausea or anything like that. Just some mild spotting. I didn't even have to take any pain meds because the pain was subsiding on it's own. The next day, I was fine. As a matter of fact it was as if nothing had happened to me whatsoever. That following Monday I did experience bleeding/spotting which only lasted about 5 days. I again has absolutely NO pain. The doctor informed me that I had a very tilted uterus but he was confident that he implanted these things correctly. I don't feel any pain at all and the cramping I only felt the day of the procedure. I have not yet had the HSG test done but am confident that all went well. A friend of mine had the Essure procedure done about 5 years ago and she couldn't be happier. I hope this is helpful for anyone that wants to have this done.

Essure symptoms May 2011
I had the procedure done in October 2009. In the beginning everything was fine. No pain, discomfort and I was on the go almost immediately after surgery. Fabulous for me (supermom). Now, my cycle comes every 21 days, I have pelvic discomfort and heavy bleeding for the first two days but just a couple of days ago, I have been experiencing lower back pain, left side pelvic pain and spotting that lasted for 6 days as if it were a menstrual cycle. I am going to the hospital tomorrow to make sure its nothing severe such as an etopic pregnancy. Permanent birth control is not for everyone and I would not recommend it to anyone. If I can have the procedure reversed...I would. Be fruitful and multiply.

I had the essure procedure done in Feb of this year. I have no complaint as of now... OTHER than my periods lasting so god awful long. Is this normal? They gave me a depo shot to give me the 3 months of birth control until we could check to see if my tubes were completely blocked. I am wondering if my never ending periods are due to the shot or due to the essure procedure. Whatever its from it seriously needs to cut it out!

Yes Essure Is Reversable
I've been thinking about getting the Essure and am doing some research when I came accross this site. All the respponces are very insightful. I wish they would do a follow up study of the women from the actual Essure study and report the TRUTH about this procedure. I think all sides (pros & cons) need to be known and addressed - Not just written of as if the woman doesn't know what she's talking about when it comes to her body. SMH.
Anyway, the Essure procedure IS reversable. I've found several facilities that have performed Essure Reversal with great success. Here's a link to one of them: http://www.tubal-reversal.net/blog/2011/tu bal-ligation-reversal/essure-side-effects- occasionally-pain-and-regret.html
Please continue to do your homework when it comes to anything with your body. And doctors, please do not be so quick to dismiss your patients symptoms because it's not "in a medical book" or some other form of doctoral information. Let's not forget doctors PRACTICE medicine - and symptoms and change all the time. Try treating the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.
Ladies, I wish you all the best and hope you get well and back to your pain free selves asap. God Bless <3
I am going to postpone my Essure consult until I dig a little deeper into this. I'm 34 and do not want anymore kids and am tired of taking the pill and do not want anything with hormones anymore.

Oh my gosh! I am scheduled for this procedure next Friday and I wanted to do some last minute research on it. When I scheduled to have this done, I found none of these horror stories. I want the procedure so I can be off hormones and be "me" again. Weight gain, cramping...I am definately going to have to think about this again!

Essure
I had the procedure done 05/13/2011. The pain during the procedure was excrutiating but I could not take all the pre-preocedure meds. due to a heart condition. The pain afterwards has been bearable but what has not is the constant DAILY spotting. I went and had this done on the last day of my period and here i am still bleeding a month later. This really stinks!!! I hope this works and it will all have been worth it.

Essure Side Effects
I had the procedure 5/27/11. It was uncomfortable during the implant, but not unbearable. However, now I have been having severe pelvic pain and back pain for the last 3 days. So bad that I can't even pick up my 5 month old son! I go to the dr. tomorrow, hope for some relief. However, it sounds like going to the dr who did the procedure wasn't helpful for everyone. Well, I won't stop until this pain does.

Essure questions
All of the comments have been really helpful. I am currently using the Mirena and was having problems. I continue to develop polyps in my cervix. I wanted something permanent due to other health issues my dr recommended trying something w/o hormones. I am glad to read the good, bad and ugly stories regarding Essure. For those who have not had a lot of negative side effects or for those who are currently doing fine; how long do you spot afterwards? Bleeding is huge for me. Thank you to everyone for sharing there story. You really helped me out.
