Q: Epithelial wound treatment
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 17th, 2008
Last week I had a biopsy done on a freckle about the size of a pea on my penis shaft just above the ring and about an inch below the head. The dermatologist numbed it with a needle and then cut it out with a scalpel. I would like to know how long it will take for this cut to heal. It is about 1-2 mm deep and about the size of a pea in diameter. What should I put on it to prevent scarring. It is not bleeding. I have been putting polysporin on it with a bandaid 3 times a day. I am getting nervous since the swelling hasnt completely gone away yet and I havent really seen any satisfying improvement in a week. Is this something that is going to take a month or more to heal? Please let me know. Any recommendations for helping it heal faster would be appreciated. Thankyou for your help.

Current medical status: Biopsy on penis
Current medical treatment: Cleaning area with soap and applying Polysporin and band-aid 3 times a day

The wounds that do not complicate (get infected) usually heal by themselves in 1-2 weeks. The recovery of the epithelium might be prolonged by any ointment. You might want to stop polysporin, which contains two antimicrobial agents: bacitracin and polymyxin B. It is good as a precaution, but is unnecessary because there is not liquid coming out of the wound, thus indicating that the wound is not infected.
