Q: Epilepsy hereditary ?

Can epilepsy be hereditary? My mother had her first seizure at the age of 29.My brother had his first one at the same age. Unforchantly for the past 13 year medication has not worked very well for him. On 4/27/2009 a seizure took his life at the age of 41 years old.This is something that I really need to understand.
