Q: epigastric hernia

hello doctor. my mother is having epigastric hernia. she had an umbilical hernia two times before . the problem which we face is about the anesthesia. she is the paicient of high blood pressure and have a cervical problem too. so we are scared about giving her general anesthesia.. we know that for treating epigastric hernia ,spinal anesthesia can not be given but can you please suggest any kind of anesthesia, other than general ... is it possible to give local anesthesia and operate . Sad . please doctor i m very much worried about my mommy Sad please consider my problem . i will be very thankful ..

It depends primarily upon how large this hernia is. If it is small (< 5 cm in diameter, or less), then it might be possible to repair it with IV sedation and local anesthetic. If it is a large hernia, however, then it may be safer to use general anesthesia. You can also talk to an anesthesiologist about using either propofol or ketamine as "twilight anesthesia" if your mother's hernia is not very large.
