Q: Enlarged vein on hand
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 13th, 2009
Today, after ice skating, yes - my hands were very cold as usual (I skate 3x a week, so nothing new), I noticed a vein very enlarged on the top of my hand (not the palm),that was very enlarged/popping out (maybe a 1/2" - near the top of my thumb). It was only temporary. Is this something I should be concerned about????? I have no other symptoms, so am assuming it's nothing.
Hope I am correct???

Blood Disorders Answer A5382
The symptoms you describe can not be related to a known disorder. The lack of pain also indicates that the condition was within normal physiological changes. Perhaps what you noticed was the appearance of a local vaso-constriction of the outgoing veins due to the low temperature. After such an occurence, vaso-dilatation of the capillaries may have followed. The official medical term for this is " the exhausted local blood vessel constriction reflex" and is quite normal.
