Q: enlarged mass on thyroid

My daughter is 27 years old. She has had a lump on the left side of her neck on her gland area. It started out the size of a pea and thought it was a cyst and did not want to spend money for a doctor visit (no health insurance). It has been over a year and a half and the pea size is now approx. 2 inch circumference and extremely painful. In addition, three months ago she was thrown from a horse and had to go to emergency room. She had a CAT scan which indicated a mild concussion but the doctor said that it also indicated a large mass on her thyroid. She went to the doctor last week and they gave her an antibiotic. Did blood work with a followup in 2 weeks. What do you think? I am afraid she won't get the necessary tests as she does not have health insurance. Please advise. Thank you.

Graves disease multinodular goider?
Sounds like your daughter has multinodular goider on her thyroid probably due to Graves disease (hyperthyroidism)or thyroid cancer. Call her doctor back and get the Thyroid blood test results usually available in 1-2 days. Normal range TSH 0.4-4.2, freeT4 0.69-1.55; she will probably need a thyroid uptake and scan if blood not normal. It can be life threatening if left untreated.

thyroid mass
it can also indicate hypothyroidism. I have this kind of thyroid condition and I too have multinodular goiter. Easy and inexpensive to treat. Good luck.
