Q: Endometriosis and abscesses as a cause of pelvic pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 26th, 2009
I have had PID for years. Everytime I have a new partner it flares it up again. I always have partners checked out before and after and they are always clear.

I had a miscarriage last year and they think that is why it has flared back up.

I am worried that it is more than PID. The pain was always in my right side and although it has subsided I still have pains, but they seem to be on both sides of my abdomin. I am worried it is something else and they have left it because the antibiotics are working because the pain has subsided, but not totally. Everytime I go back they, say more antibiotics.

My question is could this be anything else. I dont have pain during sex anymore but I do have pains in both sides and its worse when i have a wee or go to the toilet. Sometimes I can be lying on my side and it can be very painful.

I am worried it is something else and they are not looking at alternatives and I may have problems where I cant have children or something worse Cancer?

The symptoms you reported might be related to pelvic inflammatory disease. However, there other causes for pelvic pain that have to be examined, too.

Endometriosis is one of them. Laboratory tests and a pelvic exam might confirm it.
A pelvic ultrasound exam might reveal abscesses in the pelvis that appeared due to the pelvic inflammatory disease and are now causing pain. If present, these abscesses have to be treated because they might be the source for the inflammation and are usually very hard to reach with antibiotics. Even surgery might be needed in order to remove the abscesses.
