Q: effects of smoking on lungs ?

Hi,
I am 18 and have been smoking weed almost every day, and about a pack of grits a week for almost a year now. Despite the fact that I know how dangerous smoking is, and the devastating effects it has on my lungs, I continue to indulge in these bad habits. At first it was more for social reasons, but now I am discovering how dependent on these drugs I have become. I am training to become a firefighter now, and I heard a rumor that they are testing firefighters lungs now to make sure they are healthy enough for the department. Now has come the time for me to kick these habits, and heal my lungs.
I was wondering how long it would take for my lungs to heal themselves? And is it possible for my lungs to fully heal themselves now, or have I caused permanent damage to them?

I heard that all the risks and damage will be undone after a certain amount of time. After several years, the risks will be the same of a nonsmoker, so it is well worth it to quit.
