Effects of Plan B
Posted: 04-23-08 00:27am

Hello --

My girlfriend and I had unprotected sex after a night of drinking. We realized quickly. 7 hours later, we decided to pick up Plan B and she took the two pills according to the directions. She was not using any birth control, obviously.

We had a few questions about how this might affect her period cycle. Here is a little timeline:

- Girlfriend has period March 22-25th or so. Period just "ending" around the 26th or so.
- Unprotected sex on March 27th ~2am
- Girlfriend takes two Plan B emergency contraceptive pills on March 27th ~9am.
- Today is April 22nd, approximately 26 days after taking Plan B.

My girlfriend said she had no real side effects aside from some spotting for 4-5 days after taking the Plan B pills.

She also said that her period cycle normally moves "forward", but wasn't sure how many days it usually moves as she doesn't track it or anything.

At what time frame should we start worrying about pregnancy and consider getting a home pregnancy test or one at the doctor's office?

She is approaching 4 weeks since her last period, but keep in mind we had the unprotected sex RIGHT after her last period was ending...

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

With the timing and with taking the Plan B - her risk of pregnancy is low.

Her period may very well be late. The Plan B is a dose of hormones and is used to delay ovulation. This can cause your period to be delayed as well.

She can test when she thinks her period may be due, around 4 weeks from her last period. Pregnancy tests are accurate 10-14 days after conception.
