Q: Effects of Keppra and breathing problems
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 11th, 2008
I'm wondering if it seems reasonable that this is a separate condition from my other health problems. I've had 2 doctors say that keppra can't be responsible but without fail my breathing trouble increases with each dosage increase in keppra. My best guess is that if keppra is not directly responsible, its affecting something else, which increases the breathing difficulty.

I'm very confused as to what I should be asking the doctors to find the answer to what is wrong with me. Is there a type of specialist who can oversee both my breathing trouble and epilepsy?

Current medical treatment: I've been given a proventil HFA inhaler. I'm two take two puffs for shortness of breath every 4-6 hours as needed In june I had a normal chest x-ray and echo cardiogram I've had more blood tests than I can count in the past few months. Many CBCs, TSH, T3, T4, cortisol, , mono (never been exposed), immunoglobulin, lyme disease, and quite a few rare and genetic things that an endocrinologist tested me for. WIth the exception of my hormones, they've all been normal. I've had my glucose tested by paramedics during some of the times I felt the worst

The mechanism of action of Levetiracetam (brand name: keppra) is unknown. Levetiracetam can very rarely cause adverse reactions that are similar to asthma. In 2% of the adverse reactions, it can even cause asthma. The lack of data about the mechanism does not allow any explanation to be given. If the symptoms increase after taking keppra, then your doctors might reconsider the dosage or taking keppra at all.
