My child is 6 years old, has had type 1 diabetes since 17 months of age. Beginning about a year ago he had a sudden episode of breathing difficulties. He would take long deep breaths in, raising his shoulders and head during breathing, and would breathe this way 1-3 days at a time. This has improved somewhat, the episodes are much less frequent but he still has constant shortness of breath(can't get a full breath...lots of "sighing' type breathing), nausea, stomach pain and headaches daily, constipation, itchy skin (feels like bug bites) unexplained arm, back, joint, bone and leg pain, and excessive night sweating. He had complained one day a few weeks ago and said that when he woke up all he saw was "a bunch of different colored flies flying everywhere, he has also complained in recent weeks about the TV looking like it was flipping, or jumping up and down. A lot of this seems to "flare up" and last a week or two but then gets better. The shortness of breath never really goes away but does get worse at times for no reason.

He also can not stand to have his head touched or hair brushed because he says it hurts. Routine blood tests come back normal with slight elevation of %lymph.

I have taken him to an allergist, ENT, cardiologist, and endocrinologist but no-one has any idea of what the cause may be. I am frustrated with "symptom treating" rather than finding the true cause and fear it will get worse before the true cause is found.

Re: diabetes.... Ketones have never been an issue connected with his symptoms, I always keep a close eye and the only time he has ever had them was during a bad illness.

Have you seen a MS consultant or a paedeatric consultant with regards to your son? The symptoms to describe are quite numerous...and may not relate soley to MS, my opinion. Is there anyone with MS in your immediate family? Although it's not always heriditary, MS can be ''passed'' genetically (excuse the crude way of putting this.) However, MS-symptoms are usually experienced in those in their late teens to those in their mid 30's....nevertheless see a medical specialist.

It is very, very, very rare that a child of this age would be dx'd with MS and a large marjority of the symptoms that you have given are not usually related to MS. Type 1 diabetes at such a young age, I've never heard of such however I continue to learn new things.

Have you considered taking him off of all cow dairy, wheat, processed foods, peanuts? Allow at least 2 weeks to see if you and your child sees and feels any improvement.

Nausea, stomach pain, constipation can be caused by food allergies...Celiac Disease is one of them. Replace cow dairy with goats dairy (it's delicious, I've tried it and it is closer to human milk than cow's)...

Are you keeping a journal of these episodes and how long they last?

Best wishes,

~Zig
