Q: Early Menopause - POF

Hi. I am 32. Yesterday I was diagnosed with Early Menopause due to natural causes or Premature Ovarian Failure. My periods have been irregular for the past 3-4 years, with my last full period being 5 months ago ( in Feb) and prior to that 7 months. My FSH levels are at 75. I have NO symptoms, no hot flushes, no night sweats - I am stressed, irritable and highly over emotional, but other than that I have no other symptoms - The only reason I went to have my irregular periods checked was my partner and I were considering having a baby!

To say I am shocked and overwhelmed would be an understatement! My specialist prescribed me HRT and suggested I commence it immediately and here lay my dilemma - I am sure you are not supposed to start HRT until a year after your final period, and I al also worried about the long term effects...I guess I am wanting to know if there is anybody else out there my age going thru the same thing or who has gone thru this already and what they did? Did you take HRT? How long for? Did you go natural? What has been your outcome? Did you wait till you went a full year without a period or did you start as soon as it was recommended? Did you fall pregnant whilst on HRT? Any help, guidance support would be appreciated as I am so new to this and really confused!!

So Sorry!
I am 29. Just went to Gyno yesterday and he told me he thinks I am also having early menopause. I haven't gotten the bloodwork to be sure yet. I am scared. I also thought i was pregnant and was kind of excited. Now, this? I don't know what to do!

I can relate!
I too went through early menopause in my mid thirties though. My doctor was not looking for it when I stopped menstrating, but it showed up in my blood work. I went quickly through it and had no night sweats or any other real negative symptoms other than vaginal dryness and some sleeplessness. Oh and yes, a low libido. However my doctor was concerned about osteporosis, so about 2 years later, I went on natural HRT. I didnt feel any differently so now I am on the patch and feeling somewhat normal although I am bleeding quite often from it. (I am told that that should pass after about 6 months. )
I am very worried about the long term effects of the HRT but I just found out I am close to osterporosis. So now my doctors insist that I continue the HRT. I was feeling pretty good without any HRT but I am doing it now for my bones. It is scary especially since we are so young. This shouldnt happen until we are older.!!! Hang in there!

I can slo relate.
So sorry to hear of your news. Its always hard to find people that can rleate but you may be surprised at how many of us there are out there.

I started at 29. No kids, no partner. To say i was devasted was an understatement. They put me on the pill for about 3 years as this sometimes helps them "restart" on their own. Unfortunalty this was not my expierence and I am now on HRT. I was in such a bad place mentally & physically without HRT that I have personally made the decision that my quality of life would decrease without them. I have tried the natural remedies but i think some of us get the symptoms a little more severe.

My only advise if go somewhere that specialises in menopause. The local GPs don't have the epierence in dealing with early menopause. They are used to dealing with 60 year old woman so the treatment they recommend may not be suitable. Believe me, I had to go through many different types of HRT before I went somewhere that was expierence. Family Planning & the major hospitals often have great services available.

I agree with ellevich as I have often wondered "why me". Once I started to see a doctor that specialises with woman with these types of problems have I worked through the grief issues that go along with this. Stay strong, there are heaps of us out here going through the same thing!

me too
i have read so many of these boards and have never posted on one. i found out last year that I had POF and I felt like a knife was put through my heart but I am a christian and so I am praying everyday for a miracle. I want kids so bad I and so you can just imagine what my husband and I are going through but I just want to say to everyone stay strong and keep be faith. I am on HRT and apart from breast tenderness I have no real problems. I need it for my bones so I am on the patch. Chelsea Hospital London has a clinic that speacialises in this, that is where I go.

What do you guys feel about egg donation?

PREMATURE OVARIAN FAILURE
I was diagnosed with pof since the age of 25 i am 38 years old now. I did try HRT but got scared of all the talk about cancer. I am now on Estratest and provera which do make me get a period every month and i'm still getting the hormones i need to maintain healthy bones and i live a normal life. No vaginal dryness, no hot sweats. It works for me. As far as having children the only way possible is though IVF with egg donation. Wich is something that i would do, but it's very costly. But that is a definate plan for me.

Very Upset and in the same boat
I am in the same boat, my partner and I were trying to conceive and thought we were pregnant then was confused when the test came back negative. Went to the doctor and after a few blood tests I was found to have POF at 41. I am still going through the why stage but with me it is a case of why did I leave it so long. Going to see a specialist to discuss it but find it really hard knowing that even though I still have the occasional period I am not likely to be producing the relevant egg. Sad
