An ear infection is medically referred to as "otitis media" of the middle ear, "otitis externa" of the external ear or "otitis interna" of the internal ear. Most often, an ear infection affects the middle ear as the middle space inside the ears becomes clogged with fluid and mucus. This can affect hearing, because sound cannot get through all that fluid or pus.
