Many doctors do not treat ear infections at all. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended not treating ear infections with antibiotics because they feel many of them are caused by viruses. Antibiotics are not effective with viruses. That being said, ear infections do not cause permanent hearing loss. Do you have an ear infection? You can take a decongestant, like psuedoephindrine and take an antihistamine. This will help to dry up the fluid behind the ear drum. If you have concerns go see a doctor. Some doctors will still treat ear infections with antibiotics.
