Hi everybody.
I am new to this forum but after spending thousands of dollars with various "specialists" I am at my wits end.
I have been suffering from a dry throat and nasal passage (at the back of my throat where the soft palate is) and I have a taste like you get when you're about to get a cold or the flu. I have had these symptoms for around nine months now. I have tried four different doctors, had several blood & urine tests and been to ENT specialists with no relief. I don't mind SPENDING money, I don't like WASTING it. The best way I can think to describe it is it feels like I have been yelling over loud music at a night club all night, I sometimes even lose my voice. The back of my nasal passage and throat get so dry it feels like I'm breathing razor blades which is making it hard to get some sleep. I am a musician and singer and this is destroying my life. I haven't sung for months. When it first started happening I could only get through about 6 songs, then 3 songs and now I can't even do a 2 minute vocal warm up. It started in late february and then in april I got tonsilitis, I thought maybe it may have been a slow moving infection that took a while to turn into tonsilitis but after I was on abocillin and my tonsilitis cleared up my throat problems are still there and have been since. I have had and tried the following:

*Blood test - all clear
*Urine test - all clear
*Tried a vapouriser
*Had a camera up my nose and down my throat - all clear
*Camomile Tea 3-4 times a day for a few weeks
*Gargled salt water for a couple of weeks
*Nasal Irrigation
*Currently using mometasone furoate nasal spray for a couple of weeks so far
Still no difference.

Most doctors really couldn't care less, they still get paid the same whether they bother to have a look or just tell me to se an ENT specialist. I am a sales manager so I do talk a lot but I took a week off work last week and I actually started feeling a little better but I was back at work for about an hour today and it started up again. I am not sure if it is some sort of allergy (I've been in the same place for over 10 years) or maybe stress, but I don't feel stressed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan.

Ok, so now I am getting chest pains in the left side of my chest. Went to the doctor and had an ECG. Came back with "sinus bradycardia" and "poor R progression in right precordial leads". Not sure if this means anything or has anything to do with my throat. I have also been getting a random prickly sensation over my body for a few seconds then it goes away.

dry throat and nose
Hi Dan

I've had similar symptoms (dry soft palate and dry nose) for over two years and I still haven't been diagnosed. Have you still got the same symptoms? Have you found out what you've got?

Hi Maria.

Unfortunately I am still having the same problem. It has been almost a year now. The camomile does nothing I was told that the sack around my heart may have been swolen from an unrelated virus causing my chest pains which have now gone away. I saw a naturapath who told me to drink marshmallow root tea every hour for four days but this didn't really seem to help. I caught up with a friend last night who I havn't seen in ages and after two hours of talking it felt like I was breathing razor blades so it definately hasn't gotten any better. As awful as it is to hear you have the same problem it makes me feel better knowing that someone else has a similar issue and it's not just in my head. I'm not sure what to do. I am getting depressed.

Cheers,

Dan.

I have had the same issue for about 16 months now and have to have cough drops and throat spray and salt near my bed every single night. It's very depressing indeed. I've been to 4 different doctors and none said anything. Sad it's not diabetes or anemia or cholesterol issues. I have no idea what could be causing this either. Has anyone gotten diagnosed yet?

Nothing yet, but I have to see yet another doctor (the 11th one so far) in Sydney in a few weeks so hopefully I will find out what is happening.

I saw a dr. yesterday and she said I need my tonsils out. This is because my tonsils are swollen. Well at least one of them is and she said this could get worse at night (which for me it does) since they could be partially blocking my airway, making me an open mouth sleeper/snorer. I see an ENT specialist yet again next Monday. I will let you know what happens. Have you ever had any type of infection in your tonsil area? Have you thought of potential causes from your own thought? I had what's called a peritonsillar abscess about two and a half years ago. The fact that since then I've had a bad post nasal drop problem since THAT day makes me think maybe this chronic dry throat (which may possibly be linked to my tonsils) came from the onset a year later after the abscess was gone. Maybe my tonsils weren't the same ever since. Have you been tested for std's, just so you can rule any of that out? Anyway, I'll keep you updated. Sorry you're going through this. I know how it feels though and I have the utmost empathy for you right now.

I had tonsilitis about 20 months ago around the time all these problems started but every doctor I have seen told me it wouldn't have caused any lasting problems. I also saw another Dr three days ago who said I had a Polyp in my left frontal sinus, my adenoids were huge and my tonsils were abnormally large as well. No other doctors thought these things would be causing my problems but this new doctor suggested I should have my adenoids reduced, my tonsils out and the polyp removed. He can't say for sure if this is what's causing my problems until I go ahead with the surgeries and see. Problem is the surgery's are going to cost just under $10,000!
I will wait for a couple of weeks and get a second opinion from this other doctor in Sydney and see what he says. I would suggest getting a CT scan of your sinuses to see if you have any nasal polyps or signs of sinusitis.

Interesting. Well problem is I have free health care so either they'll do it all for free or not at all. But it seems as though there may be something the doctors aren't seeing. Maybe it's a combo of a couple things with our tonsils. Do you drink a lot of soda? My new doc says to lay off the soda and drink diluted juice. I don't drink abnormal amounts of soda but apparently it helps dry out your throat. Have you found any short term remedies that help you get through the night? What I've found useful is Himalayan sea salt. As I'm sure you know one of the suggested remedies is to gargle salt water but what I do is just tilt my head back and take a pinch of it and drop it in. It burns a little but feels good at the same time. Don't use normal salt. It's not good for you. This salt is pretty good for you. It's got 84 minerals and it's all natural. It's allowed me to eliminate using cough drops which I used to use A LOT. I used about a 30 cough drop bag every week. It was terrible. Anyway, cepacol throat spray is also a strong throat spray that provides temporary relief for me. It's like a good burning sensation. LoL. But yeah I have the ENT appointment Monday. I hope they cover this surgery if I need it.

I have been using a NeilMed nasal irrigator . It doesn't look pretty but it works and helps to relieve dry nasal passages which in turn help my throat. Also chewing sugar free gum (constantly) has been a life saver. I rarely drink Soda but I do like a beer!!!
I feel for you in this horrible situation, nobody understands just how horrible it is unless they are in the same situation. Go buy yourself some gum, it helps immensly and makes your breath smell pretty too!

Cheers,

Dan.

This may sound awkward, but I only wanna ask do I can see if there are any coincidences. Plus we are pretty anonymous on here. Are you gay by chance? I will admit that I am. Maybe sexual activities have brought this on or escalated the problem? Thanks for the remedy advice by the way. No one does understand unless they live through it.

I am hetrosexual and have been in a relationship with the same person for 8 years now. If you have been having a lot of sexual activities with different partners you should consider having tests done. Have you had any tests?

I've been tested for most std's and they've all been clear. I'm going back to the doctors for an allergy test early next month. We'll see what happens. He prescribed me a nasal spray but it hasn't really been helping. I got my blood drawn to check for B12 deficiency. Waiting to see those results. I'll let ya know when I know.

Well I got tested for allergic reactions to dogs, cats, trees, pollen, and weeds. Nothing came back. So the doc's are still stumped. I am supposed to be hearing back about yet another appointment for an ENT specialist. We will see where that takes us. Thanks for checking in.

DRY NOSE/ ALLERGY RELIEF
I have more homeopatic advice
The mucous membranes are linked to colon and jejunal health, nasal passages- to urinary and genital health
Separate nutrition- so proteins to eat separately,
fasting for 24 hrs also helps to cleanse the body
Also, to take 2 tablets of activated charcoal 4-5 times a day when having sharp symptoms of allergies and reduce to 1 tab 3 tid when they are no such severe
Also, personally I will try buckthorn oil that has antimicrobial functions - dip into cotton swab and swab into nose - it`s natural, so won`t hurt to use it,plus musous membranes will recover/ heal, good luck to all of us, be healthy, be fit and strong! Smile

CURE dry throat and nasal passage or dry soft palate :
Hi guys
I m from brisbane, i got same problem
My throat and nasal passage starts getting very very dry

I drink a lot of water but problem stays there

How ever i have found a solution for it, lot of Ancient Indian people or Sikh People were use to Meditate a lot and i have read somewhere that if you Meditate a lot or recite some words or speak a lot you may get symptoms like SlimJim2 in his November 29th, 2010 post

Solution / cure is : rub a little (10-15gm) Pure Butter( without salt) on your head with your fingers or palm 5 -8 minutes per day before sleep

Do this continuos 2-3 days, when you get symptoms back redo it

Pure butter gets into your head and reaches to soft palate and nasal passage and feeds some moisture and stops the dry feeling

I had same problem after spending 3 months continuous Meditation
And this cure is helping me a lot

You might get butter smell in your head but you can shampoo your head in morning or can use hair spray

You can also use buckthorn oil as described by Coololena1 posted November 12th, 2012

I use pure Mustard oil instead buckthorn oil , dont forget to buy PURE MUSTARD oil ( available coles or indian grocery store)
A cheap or mixed Mustard oil will give you a little spicy feeling into your nose

I think our planet weather is changing and its giving us some of these problems

Dont forget to clean your nose at the end of the day or use a air filter mask on your nose

Dont forget to reply or you can get me at thindsoftcorp(at)gmail(dot)com

Regards
Harry

Sore and dry throat and nasal passages
I get this same problem of sore/dry throat & nose but it's not all the time like the others said. Mine lasts for a couple weeks 3-4 times a year. All the doctors I've seen have said its seasonal allergies then prescribe a nasal spray or decongestants. Problem with those is they seem to make it worse. Instead I use throat sprays like cloroseptic, garling w/ salt water, and throat lozenges.

The only thing that's been different is one dr looked down my throat with a scope and said it looked as if I had a lot of acid reflux because it had "burned" my throat. This was no surprise as I've been diagnosed with reflux for years and take prescription meds to control it. Meds don't always keep it down though so I get heartburn often.

Whether the reflux is the problem or not, I haven't found anything that really helps and I welcome any and all suggestions.

Amy

Slimjim, have you got yourself sorted yet. I'm having that razor blade sensation in top of mouth for last 13months and nothing working. Seen lots of different doctors, specialists and still no closer.
Cheers Davad
