Q: Dry retching and gagging and hiatus hernias
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 2nd, 2008
Hi there,

I have a problem with dry retching, I've had it for about 4 months and it seems to be getting worse. I never bring up anything but it's got to the stage where I can wake in the morning and within 5 minutes am retching. I have always been a worrier and take 1 25mg Atenlol every 3 days, this used to be 1 a day but my GP said just to take one if i'm feeling anxious. The feeling I get is the roof of my mouth seems to feel swollen (it's not) and then I gag. This can be embaressing as sometimes when I'm talking to people I gag. I do think it maybe in the mind as it can happen at any time and I think about it constantly so it's a knock on affect. I also get it before going out, yesterday I was meeting friends in the pub - I walked to my car and then came back cos I started gagging, I then made myself go again and got to the pub and gagged in the car park. Went in the pub and was fine - also in the day went to take my dog out, gagged alot when I started but was then ok. Thank-you

Your symptoms (dry retching, gagging) can be due to a hiatus hernia, but anxiety can be considered as an additional cause, too. That feeling of a swollen mouth (without having a real swelling) is probably due to anxiety.

You may want to consult a mental health professional about your condition.
