Q: Doctor won't renew inhaler prescription

I have a prescription for an inhaler for exercise induced asthma. I got it from my allergy doctor. I got it filled and it had 4 refills. The prescription expired after 1 year and I never got a refill as I didn't need it. My pharmacy called to get it re-issued and he won't re-issue the prescription.

This is in Washington state. The medication isn't even for anything serious. Is there some reason why he won't renew this other than his own greed? I work 70 hours and taking what little free time I have to go get an appointment to prove that, yup, I still have allergies and exercise induced asthma seems nauseating for me.

Is there some statutory thing here or is this just totally unnecessary?

I can't imagine why he wouldn't re-issue it, unless he thought you didn't need it. Ask him, and then try another doctor if he still refuses.

You received 4 refills from your doctor. It's been over a year since you have seen him. I do not find it unreasonable that he didn't refill it. You are worth the time to go and get it checked out. I use an inhaler and get 6 refills. I have to go see him if I want more. Just standard practice.

Best wishes to you.

Your doctor *can't* refill it if it has been over a year. It's not his greed. That's the law.

Also, if you don't need the prescription, why do you want to refill it? If your asthma has gotten worse to where you do need it, that is enough reason to see the doctor.
