I just found a few new moles on my body. They are less than the size of a pencil eraser but are very dark for my skin type - they look black! I recently had an appt with the dermotologist to remove a big ugly mole i have and when i was in there she said she wasnt concerned at all about the raised ugly one, but more about the many black ones i have. I just thought they were black freckles! So she biopsied two of them by excisional biopsy with stitches. I am nervously awaiting results! She said there were several others she wanted to biopsy but that we'd start with the two and do more if necessary. So when i got home I checked over myself and found these two. They are smaller than the ones she removed but also seem odd to me. WDYT? I am getting worried! I am 34 and have YEARS of sun damage. NOT smart I know.

Normal moles can be black in color.
The ones that were brown or pink when they first appeared, may darken with time due to sun exposure.
The black color is not the subject for concern.
As I see from the picture the mole has an uneven color (brown mole with darker spots with the lighter halo) that can cause some worries.

Do you find fine scales on the mole?
Are you experiencing some itching?

Thank you for your response. I've been worried sick over this. I don't really have any fine scales on this one, but the one they took off my arm definitely had fine scales and itched at night...that is why i finally went in to have it removed. The Dermotologist immediately said - this needs to go, by excisional biopsy. The derm's alarm made me worried! I wasn't even worried about it when i went in. Now I've been searching the internet and i'm scared to death. I have a 4 month old daughter and two boys ages 2 and 5. I hope I get my biopsy results back soon. Is it true that if the results are bad you will find them out quicker? If I hear nothing...is that a 'good' sign?

Newly formed fine scales and itching in a mole can be common symptoms of early melanoma.
Have you noticed that the texture of the suspected moles have changed (hard and lumpy), too?

Please, don't worry too much!
Melanoma can be cured if it is diagnosed and treated at the early stage (when the tumor is thin and has not deeply invaded the skin).

Thinking of you!
