I just found out my niece has DM. What is this? My sister said that what looked like a rash on her body was her blood cells attacking each other and rupturing. She said eventually it can go to her heart and there will be nothing they can do. If anyone knows what this is please fill me in. I want to be able to be there for my niece and my sister. Thanks-

Extremely eHealthy
What she has is most likely a myeloproloferative disorder, when cells grow abnormally in the bone marrow.
Red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells, all originate from bone marrow.
When their production go out of the control, there could be too many red blood cells, too many platelet cells, abnormal white blood cells or there could be a subtype of MD when there is a lack of all blood cells.
Purple spots or patches on the skin are symptom of polycythemia vera (too many red blood cells), a subtype of MD, and puts the patient at risk for blockage of blood vessels resulting in heart disease, stroke, or gangrene (tissue death) of the arms and legs.
Heart attack, stroke with easily bruising are symptoms of essential thrombocytosis, another subtype of MD.
Blood tests, bone marrow biopsy are helpful in correct diagnosis, since every subtype has its own characteristic treatment.

Best wishes!
