Q: Dizzness / nausea when sleeping on back

This started many years ago. When I lay down on my back I am fine but when I start to drift off to sleep I get a dizzy/nausea feel that can only be stopped by opening my eyes or rolling to either side. I have always delt with it and slept on my side or stomach but would love to sleep on my back again....BTW my wife says that after I fall asleep that sometimes I roll onto my back and this has never bothered me but I never wake up on my back so I don't really know. Any ideas what could be causeing this?

These attacks of sudden, short-lasting dizziness due to lying down in bed and changing head position, accompanied with intense reactions like nausea, vomit, pale skin, sweating, and sometimes diarrhea, are known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Do you often feel dizzy and unsteady when you tip your head back to look up?
Have you noticed that this can happen for a period than stop and reappear again?

Do you say that this have happened for you every night for the last 10-15 years without free of dizziness periods in between?

Are you experiencing some hearing loss, too?

nauseous when sleeping on back
This happened to me last night. I don't intentionally go to sleep on my back. I always fall asleep on my tummy or side. Last night I drifted off to sleep on my back for 20-30 minutes. I woke up feeling nauseous & dizzy. I rolled to my tummy & then side. The nausea didn't stop, but I fell back to sleep. I also feel this way when I am sitting up/watching TV & drift to sleep. This has happened before, but I just thought to google it this morning. I read a little about vertigo but am not sure that's the cause. My ears have always been sensitive to loud noises and I wonder if that's part of the problem.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Hi - I came across this post, and I too have similar issues. It takes forever for me to fall asleep (1-2hrs) and I have always been that way. Many nights - just as I am drifting off - I will get nauseous/virtigo feeling (as if you have a hangover) and it will snap me right back awake. For me - it dosen't matter how I am laying. It never wakes me up once I am asleep and I never wake up nauseous, its only just as I am drifting to sleep. If this happens several evenings in a row - I find it even harder to fall asleep as I'm loathing the nauseous feeling I know will come as soon as I start to drift asleep. Anyone thoughts?

There is a condition where certain "rocks" are loose in your inner ear. When they roll around they stimulate being dizzy. You describe a certain position that brings this on. Sounds like the loose rocks are causing this. Why does this bother you when you fall asleep? that is because awake you can suppress the feeling but asleep the suppression is removed.
The treatment is simple. The doctor moves your head so that the rocks are put back in place. An otologist usually does this but check at your hospital or ENT doctor.

I have been plagued with this for the last couple of years. I don't remember getting any ear infections or anything like that, but it seems that for the last few years my ability fall asleep has been terrible and when I am extremely tired or full, I will get these symptoms. It is the worst nausea ever and sometimes it takes over 2 hours to get to a state in which I can attempt to go back to sleep even though it only took five mins of me trying to fall asleep to bring on the nausea! It is awful! I have noticed that sometimes this nause has been brought on by what I call "sleep seizures." I am not epileptic, but sometimes I try to wake up and I am in a lucid dreaming state in which I feel totally paralyzed but I know I am awake and I can hear what is going on around me. When I finally pull myself out of the sleep, I get severe nausea. Any thoughts as to what this is or if they are connected?

Dizzy right as falling asleep
Chassra- I am responding because I have the almost the exact same situation, but do not see an answer to it. I feel fine lying in bed, but JUST as I fall asleep, literally feels like the moment right before I would drift off, I feel a dizzy sensation, mostly in my head, but no nausea associated with it, and it wakes me back up. After the first few nights this happened, I was "used to" it and didn't let it wake me back up, but was aware of it just as I was falling asleep. I have never had any kind of vertigo or dizziness before this, and after it started, I never felt it at any other time. (??)

I have the same exact issue and i went to the doctor. I'm always tired no matter how much i sleep and i'll sometimes get the dizzy feeling and i feel like my head is spinning when i'm sitting still to long, like when i'm in class. But he diagnosed me with chronic fatigue syndrome. I don't know if that helps, but he's trying to get me on some anti-depression meds to treat the symptoms.

Something similar has been happening to me as well the past few weeks. Only, I've always slept on my stomach/side, and position of sleep doesn't matter - it happens no matter the position. Just as I start to drift off, I feel as though I'm going to vomit & spin at the same moment, and I have to quickly open my eyes, and change my position. It takes several minutes to get over the sensation before trying again - to the same results. Not getting any sleep as a result.
