Q: Dizziness and eye spasms
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 17th, 2009
Just last year sometime before I got pregnant with my first child I begain to get these horrible migraines almost every other day or even everyday. But they weren't like any migraine I've ever had before. The symptoms that accompanied it were dizziness just while sitting down, these "spasms" in my eyes where they almost shake from side to side very quickly, throbbing pain, pressure like my head is going to "explode," and the most recent symptom; clicking or popping noise in the back of my head when I lay down.

I've told my primary doctor about these symptoms and she treats me like a unimportant patient and just keeps giving me prescription after prescription none of which seem to work some of them only make me very sick. Please help me to know what this could be. And yes I do plan to hopefully find a new doctor soon.

I have a 4 month old baby I have to take care of on my own as my husband is in the Army and is gone in the field for weeks at a time and I can't funtion properly w

Headache and Migraines Answer A7483
Hi
Welcome to the forum!
With history of headache (throbbing pain, pressure like my head is going to "explode," ), visual symptoms (spasms" in my eyes where they almost shake from side to side very quickly), and tinnitus (clicking or popping noise in the back of my head when I lay down), benign intracranial hypertension should be looked into.
This happens due to impaired CSF absorption. A generalized throbbing headache worst felt in the morning and last thing at night. This headache is generally relieved on standing (consistent with raised intracranial pressure). It is aggravated by straining, coughing or a change in position. Hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, adrenal insufficiency are a few tests recommend that you get investigated for. These can precipitate BIH. A spinal tap is a must both to diagnose the condition and to treat it.
The other possibility is a retinal migraine. It could also be a case of post partum (after delivery) psychosis 9You can discuss this with your gynecologist if all other conditions are eliminated as the cause of your headaches). It can be a migraine with aura of visual symptoms and tinnitus. It would be good if you can consult a neurologist.
However without examining it is difficult to give a confirmed diagnosis and treatment on net. Hence consult your doctor and discuss these points. Hope this helps. Take care!
