Q: diseases w/ same symptoms as hypoglycemia?
asked by: randyNH on September 26th, 2008

All of my symptoms are in line with hypoglycemia. I am on a strict hypoglycemic diet. I just recently bought a glucose meter and tested myself when I was feeling weak. My readings were normal 90-100. My doctor said I was going the right approach with the diet and that GTT are not used often anymore.

Any insight would be helpful.

If I hear your symptoms first I might be able to tell you possibilities.

I have to eat every 2-3 hours. If I don't I get weak and cannot concentrate. I also feel fatigued. If I eat food with a lot of sugar I will pay for it the next couple of days. I will develope short term depression, which includes low self esteem and fatigue.

Some symtoms that throw me off are occasionally if I get hungry It seems that a quick hypoglycemic fix like eating a handfull of almonds and a slice of cheese will not lift the hunger and weakness that I would feel

It could be IPD (I see you found the thread Very Happy), as it does sound like reactive hypoglycemia.

Stick to the diet and see how you improve, IPD will improve on that diet too. If you don't improve, it could be worth seeing a gastro incase it's related to food sensitivities/enzyme deficiencies etc.

Definitely try adding digestive enzymes with your meals, especially a blend that has a good amount of amylase enzyme, to help break down and process sugars. This could really help. Many things can cause enzyme deficiencies.

hypoglycemia sypmtoms
i have had similar symptoms since I was 14. Now I am 31 and i am still struggling with the same problems. I feel weak every two to three hours and feel that i need to eat right away. eating does make me feel better but only for a short while.other symtoms i feel are loss of concentration, depressoin, irritability, feeling that my legs cannot hold me any longer and just a very miserable feeling.
I have tried prozac, effexor, welbutrin at different times in the past and none ever helped with the symptoms I have mentioned above. I have been thoroughly tested by the doctors but nothing abnormal has ever shown up in the tests. I am not overweight either. I have never been on a hypoglycemic diet but i do not take a lot of simple sugars and things made from white flour.
just wanted to share my problems so that u know that u are not the only one out there.

Similar symptoms to Hypoglycaemia
Same case here. I have had symptoms very similar to Hypoglycaemia since I was 20. Now I am 46 and I am still struggling with the same problems. I feel weak every two to three hours and feel that I need to eat right away. Eating does make me feel better but only for a short while. However, if I ate sugar it becomes worse. Other symptoms I have are loss of concentration, depression and irritability. And really, my legs/ knees are unable to bear my body weight. I can't carry even a 2 litre milk bottle and walk for a 100 metres.Just feel very miserable and worthless living.

I have been of Losec for the past 8 years and it has not helped me in any way. I have been thoroughly tested by the doctors but nothing abnormal has ever shown up in the tests. I am not overweight either. I have never been on a hypoglycemic diet.

Just wanted to share my problems and see if anyone can help me out of it.

You need to get on the diet right away.
Avocado on that sprouted wheat bread works wonders as well as the protein. In the beginning, it's hard to know what to eat. Not only do you have no energy but it's really hard to think up what to eat. I recommend the diet it's worth a try, but you must stick with it and don't drink coffee. That makes it worse too. Smile

Similar symptoms to Hypoglycaemia
Strange it may seem, my body is unable to differentiate between Butter, Avocado and Guava. The moment I consume any of these, I get a very severe chest pain and have to be rushed to the doctor. This condition will last for atleast 2 to 3 weeks. I have not had coffee, tea, milk or alcohol for the past 25 years. There are only a few fruits and vegetables I can eat too. Most of them are intolerant. I have been seeing various specialists for the past 10 years and nobody has an explanation for my condition. All they do is keep referring to another specialist. I am thinking, could this all be due to some kind of ENZYME DEFICIENCY? If so, what diagnosis is available to confim this?

Hi Everyone, I am new to the forum, 53 year old female, living in U.K. I too have had hypoglycemic episodes since I was a teenager, but lately, things have gone mad, and I
have been unable to leave my house for the past week. My symptoms are constant. I am doing the diet, but the roller coaster of highs and lows is terrifying. I will feel ok briefly after food, then plunge into hypo hell - gnawing hunger pains, intestines in an uproar, and the worst symptom, the lightheadedness and feeling I am going to pass out.
HOWEVER, my blood glucose readings are perfectly normal. I cannot even wait 2 hours between snacks, I seem to be shoving down food constantly. My partner cannot believe it. I cannot even get from bedroom down to kitchen quickly enough. I gave a cooler beside my bed and my bed is littered with snack foods. As for a mid meal snack being
"2 celery sticks with almond butter" or "a handful of nuts" -NEVER. I need sooo much more than this, almost constantly. It is surreal.

I will write more soon, typing this is such a struggle and feels as if I am using up a ton of energy. Thank God for you all, I am struggling to find doctor who takes me seriously. If anyone out there is from the UK and found someone good, I would cut off my right arm to have their details!

rn2145,
I'm sorry I don't know anything about the enzymes and I hope you get this resolved. That's a long time to be suffering.
Wimbledonlady,
I can relate...especially to the lightheadedness. Makes driving really really hard and can bring on a panic attack for me.
I am wondering if anyone else here has experienced severe vertigo attacks? I've had four in the last 3 years or so and am wondering if they are related?

hypoglycemia or something else?
Wow, I'm new here and have been trying to do research online for my symptoms and stumbled across this thread. For 13 years, I've needed to eat every 2 to 3 hours when my "hypoglycemic" symptoms (light-headedness, weakness, fatigue, flushed face, feeling sweaty & hot, "foggy" brain) come on. If I eat a small, balanced meal, my symptoms will go away, but they always recur 2 to 3 hours later, no matter what I eat (and I've played around a lot with my diet). I've been to a lot of doctors who have never been able to help me. I would lovelovelove to find anything that could help me. I also cannot tolerate sugar and find that eating sugar will bring on the episodes more quickly (as will being on my period, missing out on sleep, and exercising hard). All of this also occurs during the night, which means I'm getting up every few hours to feed myself, and it leaves me feeling very tired. Does anyone have any idea of what could help?

Hypoglycemia at night
Hi again,

Does anyone have these symptoms wake them up during the night? Please please let me know if you've found anything to help you. I've had these symptoms (detailed above) day and night for 13 and 1/2 years; they are very regular in coming every 2 to 3 hours. Please, I would love to find anything that would help me sleep during the night; it leaves me with such exhaustion. I haven't been able to find anything that lets me sleep more than 2 to 3 hours at a time: A very high-protein meal right before bed doesn't work. Sleeping pills (prescriptions) don't work; the episodes still happen despite them. Thank you for reading and for any suggestions you could give me.

Hi Joybd,

I read somewhere that eating one of those tiny cans of tuna
before going to sleep helps. I tried it, and it worked for me. Good luck!

Hypoglemic or what I don't know
My daughter has all the symptoms of hypoglycemia. We think this is what she has. Afterward 2-3 hours she throw fits that are uncontrollable. Nothing can console her and then she does anything that she can to be gross and bad. If we get food or sugar in these fits with in 10-15 mins she calms down. I have just now started testing her blood sugar levels and they are normal. She also very rarely sleeps through the night but what has worked is a cup of white grape juice before bed. For some reason she sleeps the longest after drinking this right before bed.
