flaxseed the cause?
Just had clear sticky discharge for the first time 6 months after total hysterectomy at 37 due to severe endometriosis. I've been eating flaxseed in my oatmeal recently, and I've read it has estrogenic effects. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. No more hot flashes, but could the endo come back?

Still going strong at 58.
I am 58. I am still ovulating. I have PMS - a day of extreme mood swings and clear sticky discharge, skin break-out, sore thighs and butt, incontinence, weight gain, and ONE smear of blood. The same PMS symptoms I have had since my periods started when I was 9. The only difference I detect is that my one week menstrual period has changed from copious amounts of menstruation to less and less each year since about 50 and more and more days of copious clear thin discharge.

I consider myself to have a bloodless menstrual period as the amount of clear discharge must be managed in the same way and it has the same odor.

I have fibroids and am post menopause but flaxseed is fatal for me! They are extremely high in phytoestrogens. I was ingesting them in a fibre drink and each time my fibroids would become hard and my stomach really big. For years I was trying to combat estrogen with progesterone etc only to find this was feeding them too Sad

menopause discharge
hello sisters...i am 52 and not had a period for 2 years now..i am having all the usual symptoms of menopause..hot flushes, dryness, mood swings, cant sleep etc...3 weeks ago i got up from bed and felt this wetness down below, i thought i was leaking urine as this clear, thin, white fluid was leaking out of me, and it kept leaking for 3-4 days...then it turned a bit thicker and the colour changed to a yellowy-greeeny discharge...this went on for 3 weeks..at the start of this i had all the symptoms that i used to get when starting my period..headaches..cramplike pains and bloatedness...the nurse thought it might be a infection..had the test done ..no infection..i kept saying to the nurse that im getting the same symptoms that i used to get when i was having periods, but she was not really listning to me..my own thinking is that the body is having a period just without the blood as the clear discharge smells a bit like the period blood ussed to..4 weeks on... and today the leaking of clear slimy liquid has started again..im changing my pad every few hours...got a headache and generelly feel bloated, tired and moody..would love a docter to read all of our posts and see what they make of it...my instinct is telling me my body is trying to produce a period...but theres no blood...

Me too!
Found this searching for answers to the same symptoms; a week now of achey back, considerable pain on the right ovary area with discharge just tinged with pink-red, breat tenderness and it's so hard to get to sleep. I'm 57 and post menopause for 2 1/2 years. Another odd symptom, some small red spots on my abdomen and breats. These have been coming and going for maybe 2 or 3 years and my doctor says they are due to hormone fluctuations. Your posts have really helped me as I have been so worried, thanks for sharing, everyone.

Look at your foods!
My goodness, ladies ... we're all onto something here. Everyone seems to have a unique combination of symptoms, but everyone seems to have the discharge. I posted here a few months ago to say I was was having discharge/ovulation pain (am 55 and post-menopausal) and was going to stop eating grapefruit, as it is an estrogen booster. I did stop grapefruit, and my discharge and ovulation pain went away immediately. I was only having 1-2 grapefruit per week. Flaxseed and other estrogen-rich or estrogen-boosting foods might easily be the culprits. I've been on the Paleo diet for just over a year and have never felt better in my life ... which is why the discharge/ovulation pain was so noticeable and annoying. If it occurs again, I'll review any new foods I've introduced or am having a lot of.

I am glad I found this place. I have been having some weird sensations, hot flashes, have been post menopausal for a few years now, have not had dental work done, but I have ingested flax seed quite a bit in smoothies and bread, etc. I have just kind of crampy feelings, and only occasionally, a tiny bit of brownish dishcharge and maybe a touch of pink after I pee. I have been under a lot of stress lately also. Most of the time when I pee there is nothing, so I know it has to be some kind of hormonal thing.

Hi I have just noticed the mention of flax seed, which in my case I have been having in the form of Burgen Bread lately, plus soy yoghurts, cholesterol reducing drinks and flora pro activ spread , extra vitamin supplements and have had a period for the 1st time in 15 months.!!!! Stopping them all to see what happens. Had such sore boobs for a week, then PMS symptoms and now a light pink/brown period....have been referred by doc for scan so within 2 weeks might know more but am quite confident it's all to do with diet.Have had a lot of life changes & stress lately too.

ovulated after almost 3 years postmenopause
I had the same thing and had a cyst and it went away after four months, my doctor told me it was hormones, a follicular cyst, and I was ovulating and that I could still get pregnant. Haven't had a period in almost 3 years.

Interesting. I'm 50, haven't had a period in 7 months, had regular hot flashes, but they stopped a few weeks ago, and I started getting same discharge everyone is describing (with no smell, clear sometimes, sometimes yellow/green, sometimes blood tinged, sometimes very mildly itchy) plus a bad breakout and sore breasts. And I had just been to the dentist and had a coating put on one of my sensitive teeth.

clear discharge in menopause
This forum helped me feel better. Have been worried. Am 53 no period for 3 years, and then got a huge pimple, tender breasts, swollen abdomen, twinge (overy?), sore back, and now the clear discharge. Just as if I am ovulating. I guess I am!

menopause discharge
This is really interesting. I just Googled "menopause discharge" b/c I am 49, have not had a real period in 1 1/2 years, and have just noticed a discharge over the past two weeks. And yes, I have been to the dentist for a filling, but I think the discharge started before then. Plus little red dots around the abdomen. Bottom line: I guess it's all normal to go through this, and there may be a correlation between raised hormone levels and BPAs used in dental work.

Sudden vaginal discharge after 3 years of nothing
My story is a bit different. I am 58 and postmenopausal for about 3+ years. During that time I did not have a boyfriend/sexual partner and did not have any vaginal discharge. When I became sexually active again about 9 months ago, my vagina was very dry (thanks to menopause!). After a few months into the relationship, my vagina began to react to sexual stimulation as it used to before menopause, and I began getting vaginal discharge as all of you have described (sticky, light brown, but odorless). Suddenly in the past 3 months I began to gain weight and got swollen, sore ankles. I look and feel like I am pregnant! I have not eaten any flaxseed, grapefruit, or had any dental work done lately, so I think in my case it's the sudden sexual activity that might be causing these symptoms. It is not caused by an infection. But I am not complaining--it's wonderful to feel alive again!

Like your theory
Thanks for your post. I'm 49 and went through menopause 4 years ago. I couple of weeks ago i started having acne again. i joked with my husband it was because we have had an increase in sexual activity like being in a honeymoon. I started having a discharge that reminded me of ovulating. None of the other guesses others are posting fit me so I like yours the best. Smile

Vaginal discharge and dental works
I am so pleased that I have come across this site, thank you for sharing your experiences. I am 52, had no periods for over three years and had absolutely no discharge for the last nine months or so. And all of a sudden the discharge started again including tender breasts. Although I don't know exactly the time when the discharge started again, six weeks ago I lost the gold filling of one of my teeth leaving the foundation filling exposed. I am without dental pain and could not yet see the dentist, but after reading your comments it seems likely that the exposure to the foundation filling could leak BPAs into my body? Very interesting. I will raise this with my dentist.

I am 46(and 3/4's)and in menopause for 2 years. I have been tested and retested for the similar symptoms. Sharp twinging on my left lower side, very thick discharge, night sweats, breast tenderness, bloating and then sometimes I will get a rust/brownish colored discharge which has pieces in it similar to when you get a period. Its sporadic. I have had internal ultrasounds and even went to a urologist and gastroenterologist. Now they want me to see a cancer Dr to rule that out to. So far nothing..... Yet I am also told there's no way I'm ovulating since I am in menopause. I will say I have not had a precictable cycle ever, nothing bad, just erratic, a thickening of the lining very heavy, sometimes light, cramps sometimes but not always.... I just figure its me- unpredictable. But I am glad to hear I am not alone. And NO I have not had any dental work!

another culprit
Hello everyone,

Wow, it's amazing to hear all of your stories and symptoms. It really helps to try and make some sense of things.

For me -- unless it's sheer coincidence -- these same symptoms (lower abdominal pain, slight breast tenderness, some white-ish stringy discharge) began after I kind of went nuts with soy... I bought some soy milk and had some every day for around 10 days, and I also made a tofu and green bean dish (delicious!) that I ate over the course of only 2 days. So, a quart of soy milk plus a whole container of tofu in 10 days, I guess that's a lot of soy.... It's also a lot of estrogenic activity, which I thought I could "afford" since it has been 12 months since my last period (I'm 56).

I went to my gyno and had a vaginal ultrasound which showed a small cyst on one ovary and some small fibroids, but she did not think they were the cause of my pain. My lining was a tiny bit thicker than a usual menopausal lining and she said I may get a period. Meanwhile, it's been around 10 days of this abdominal discomfort and it's getting old...

Have any of you been consuming soy-based food or drinks? It's very hard to avoid soy as it seems to appear in everything... I guess it's a matter of quantity.

thanks for the symptomatic company and I hope our symptoms disappear soon!

vaginal discharge that's not an infection
I've been having this discharge issue for about a year and half. I am 45 and after many tests to see if it was an infection (it wasn't) I pushed for a check on my hormones. I had read because of my thyroid cancer 3 years ago and my thyroid being removed and I also got the radioactive pill after surgery, that menopause can come on earlier. Well, the test came back that I was indeed menopausal. This makes sense since my periods have been getting lighter and lighter and what used to be a 28 day cycle now is all over the place. The doc never could tell me what the discharge was about. My theory is that your body is used to getting a period for like 20 years so when your body stops getting the period, some other parts don't know it yet. The discharge isn't infection; it appears to be the vagina cleaning itself out much the way it would when you get your period. Any much older ladies know about if it ever stops?

Okay, I've been doing online research and apparently sometimes his can be Leucorrhea which is normal white thin discharge and you can get it (discharge- thin white stuff) anytime but usually you get just a splotch when you're ovulating. Also apparently, diet, lack of sleep, and hormonal fluctuations can make it happen. Google Leucorrhea and you will find many home remedies. I find the remedy of cranberry juice or banana once a day useful as its not that hard to do. I also tried the teaspoon of coriander seeds in water soaked overnight then drink in the morning is easy because a lot of us have coriander seeds in our home anyway. I hope after doing this for a week, something will happen (it will stop). My theory is now that I'm in pre-menopause or full menopause and that's the biggest reason why I am getting the discharge- hormonal fluctuation- and also a lack of full night's sleep lately a lot.

I think ovulation can be triggered by other females being around, that are ovulating, so if you start this after a break, it may be because a daughter is visiting, or you may have been around nurses.

Flowing discharge perimenopausal
Hi ladies, I am experiencing the same symptoms as many of you. I am 54, perimenopausal and my last mentrual was Februray 2005. I started having hormonal changes that affected my hair and skin. It became more dry like I was having psoriasis in my scalp which I had never experienced before and it does not run in my family. Ecxema does run in my family. In the last three years this has started showing up more but it is only mild. I never had thyroid problems but I do have other health issues like three herniated dics in my neck and two in my lumbar spine. The disc protursions are on the anterior side (front side) of my neck which I thought might be affecting my thyroid. The disc in my lumbar spine makes my groin hurt which I have been having groin pain that felt like mild cramps for about two years. I thought the lumbar disc protrusions was causing this along with the discharges. My gyne told me that can't happen. Three years ago I started itching with mild discharges that are basically odorless. For nine years no periods.
I have been seeing the dentist for a period of three weeks. The last week I have been flowing with discharge, clear, sticky, sometimes yellow or brownish. It doesn't really have an odor.
I have had discharges in the past but not to this magnitude. Feels like I am gushing where I have to wear a menstrual pad.
Ladies I think this is happening because of a variation of things we are doing and eating. Our diet is very much apart of this and those dental visits as well. I had a filling done and had a chip tooth repaired.
So I guess we are ovulating again perimenopausal and post-menopausal due to the environmental hazards that are apart of our daily lives. If this is the case...watch out for those babies after 50! Not looking forward to anymore...my job is done! LOL!

Very interesting. I am 52, stopped having periods at least 2 years ago. I am now having all of the symptoms mentioned above - bloating (worst symptom), stringy discharge as with ovulation and breast tenderness. I just had a dental crown pop off and went to the dentist - he did some drilling then glued the crown back on. I also drink a lot of soy milk (as I'm dairy intolerant) and have soy protein in smoothies about twice a week. And, I recently started eating cereal with flaxseed. I also use Premarin cream for vaginal dryness. So, I think I had an estrogen surge causing ovulation - or my body's attempt at ovulation. As with the other posters, I hope it ends soon. I liked menopause!

Can I ask how many of you ladies have actually had a period following this discharge, bloatedness and breast tenderness? Is it possible that the body is going through all the symptoms and showing none of the signs? I do hope so! My specialist said you have to have a period after ovulation ( following the stringy white discharge) but I am not so sure!!! Please advise if you can Smile

I am 50, nearly 3 years without a period and am having all the symptoms above for the last 2 weeks. I havent eaten grapefruit or had any dental work, but my 14 year old daughter has had loads of ovary pain gearing up for initial menstruation, so I think my symptoms may be down to living with someone whose oestrogen is increasing.
Any one else think this could be the case?

I am 48, at least 2 years without a period. Peri-menopause started at age 41, went through the hot flashes. Thought I was on the other side of it all. This week discharge like ovulation, except when I was ovulating it only lasted a couple of days and this has been a few days more already. My breasts are extremely sensitive, more than I remember in the pre menopause days. I do have a crack in a tooth that needs work, but that one has an old style filling? I did have a huge glass of fresh grapefruit juice this week, a some soy milk too, but I'm sure the symtoms started before that. And my daughter recently went on a high estrogen pill. I was quite happy to have some slippery back in my sex life, but now I'm a little concerned about the unprotected sex. Hard to believe that I could get pregnant at this point in my life. I am very curious to know what happened to those of you who posted a while back. Did your menstrual cycle return? Any other health issues?

No episodes of ovulation since I posted about the grapefruit juice ... haven't had any of that, nor flax seed. No, periods did not return. I am just relieved ... the no-grapefruit, no-flax diet seems to have done the trick. However, once in a while I eat Asian food that has soy (otherwise I eat no soy at all), and I notice a little ovary twinging. Don't think it's my imagination, because I'm never expecting it, but when I look back I remember having the Asian food.
