Q: Dilation and Curettage for a treatment option
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 27th, 2008
What is the cause of such abnormal bleeding from the uterus?
Should I do a D & C and hysteroscopy to look at the lining cells?
Is D & C useful for diagnosis and will there be any risk?
Should I just wait and watch and do nothing?

Current medical status: After 2 years in menopause, my menses suddenly came in May for 4 days. THen stopped. After 5 months in October, it came again the same way as previous one and stopped after 4 days. Had not taken any taximofen or any hormone treatment before. NO pain.
Current medical treatment: Did pelvic ultrasound scan twice, about 2 weeks after the "menses". Results are normal, no fibroid. thin endometrial stripe of 4mm. Pap smear done in June- normal.

Given the information you provided, there are two possible reasons that you have not tested yet. A possible hormone imbalance can be detected with laboratory hormone tests. A dysfunctional thyroid gland can also cause abnormal uterine bleeding.

Dilation and Curettage (D&C) can contribute both as a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Sometimes abnormal bleeding stops after Dilation and Curettage without determining the reason. Dilation and Curettage can cause scaring on the uterus, that might cause problems when conceiving in women in gestational period.
