Heartburn is common, but it is not trivial. It's important to diagnose and treat heartburn or acid reflux as early as possible. Review diagnostic procedure now...

For the last year i have had issues swallowing. It started as heartburn and has progressively gotten to the point where food gets caught in my throat and I often regurgitate it back up. The food is not digested and is not mixed with stomach acid... just slightly chewed. It happens while eating - not later.

It is clearly triggered by some foods (red meat, fried greasy things, dairy) but I have altered my diet and it will occur even with very mild things. Once it happens, i cannot even drink water - this comes back up too.

I no longer get heartburn, now it is the difficulty swallowing.

Sometimes eating EXTREMELY slowly works. Sometimes if I eat a little and almost clear the way... waiting about 15 minutes before starting again, then the meal goes down easier.

I have had a scope, barium swallow and a test to determine if food is moving too slwoly to my intestines. All the dr. can say is that I have lots of reflux. But I feel as though he doesn't fully understand the problem and is only hearing the hearburn part.

I had a very high stress job, which i quit. And have altered my diet to the best of my ability. I have lost 25 lbs as a result.

Any thoughts or similar cases please share what has worked!

Oh yeah, I was on prevacid early on that did nothing for this.

Oh yeah again, I am also now 3 months pregnant and not looking forward to the increase heartburn and pressure on my system.

Do you have a long-standing heartburn?

Pregnancy is one of the conditions that cause difficulty with digestion and can increase the risk of heartburn because results in greater pressure on the stomach and a higher production of the hormone progesterone. This hormone relaxes many of the body muscles, including the lower esophageal sphincter (muscle relaxes and allows regurgitation of stomach acid into your esophagus)

It started with heartburn. However, I rarely get the sharp burning pain anymore. It has become much more an issue of not being able to swallow food.

The pregnancy has not increased the problem yet (although i am only 3 mon along).

all in all, i started noticing the heartburn and the progressive problems about a year and a half ago. I would say the difficulty swallowing really started 9 months ago... so I had 6 mon of heartburn on a daily basis that subsided and turned into not being able to eat.

Do you usually get stomach acid back flow that ends up in your throat, mouth, and sometimes even up into the back of your nose?

You are experiencing difficulty swallowing known as oropharyngeal dysphagia, when there is a trouble moving the food from the mouth into the upper esophagus.

Trouble swallowing
I had a bad virus and in 9 days after severe heartburn I too could not swallow food. I am now 5 months out and still not able to eat. Myprayers are with you because you are pregnant too. I am being very aggressive pursuing doctors until they find the cause. God bless

my husband has the same thing!
My husband has the exact symtoms as you and we don't know why it happens or how to stop it. It's been happening on and off for about 6 years. He has had the proceedure where they put a scope down his throat once every two years to see whats going on. Only found some polyps that were benign, no damage to his esophogus and they just prescribe an antiacid which does nothing. I am looking into low stomach acid now instead of too much stomach acid and enzymes to see if this will acid in his digestion. I wish we could find an answer. Good luck to you. Please post if you find something that helps! We will too.
