asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 20th, 2009
Ok, im a 22 year old male with a bit of a problem.
For the last year or so ive been having a problem maintaining an erection no matter who my partner is. I have no problem achieving the erections, i just cant keep it up. ive experienced it with 4 different women. Now, i have a steady girlfriend and i dont want this to ruine my sex life. I take no medications, but i am slightly overweight. Could i be developing ED?

Referring to the data you provided (previous problem maintaining an erection), you might be experiencing erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which a man cannot develop or maintain an erection.

The causes for erectile dysfunction range from vascular (atherosclerosis affecting the corpora cavernosa) and neurological (damaged genital nerves or spinal cord) to hormonal disorders (insufficient male sex hormone production).

Psychological disorders might be a possible cause for erectile dysfunction, too. Life habits such as: alcohol intake, smoking, and obesity might affect the erection primarily via damaging the penile arteries. Certain drugs might cause erectile dysfunction as a side effect.

Since there are many possible causes for erectile dysfunction, you might want to visit a urologist for a physical examination. He might want an additional examination by a neurologist or endocrinologist. If no reason is detected, then you might want to visit a psychotherapist to check for psychological issues that might be affecting the erection.
