Q: Did not use a condom

Last night I forgot to bring a condom but still had sex. I know it is bad, and I feel terrible about it, but that doesn't change the fact that it happened. I did not climax inside my partner, but I know that pre-ejactulate has some sperm in it. What are the chances she will get pregnant if we went to the store and got the Plan B pill about 14 hours after it happened?

Heres what I found. Hope it helps!

*While not appropriate for regular use as a means of contraception, if you've had unprotected sex within the last three days and you are concerned about potentially getting pregnant, Plan B, or Levonrgestrel, can offer a large of certainty that you won't become pregnant. Learn how to use Plan B by following these simple steps.

Yes-- take Plan b as soon as possible! It will significantly lower your chances of becoming pregnant. And take it as soon as you can, because the longer you wait the less effective it is.

My partner went and got it and took the first of 2 pills about 12-13 hours after. The directions say to take the other 12 hours later. How effective is the pill exactly if we did conceive?

About 89% effective.
Good luck!

And just to give you a little warning, your girlfriend's mentruation may be a little messed up for awhile. Her period may come late or early-- heavy or light, and she may have spotting for awhile. Her period may not be able to get back on track for up to three months.

Even though it's not uncommon for her period to be late afterwards-- it's still a good idea to take a home pregnancy test if she's late.

You did the right thing to avoid pregnancy. I wanted to commend you on that.

Take a test just to make sure, as Maddie said.

Just to clarify, the correct wording would be:
"How effective is the pill exactly if we were going to conceive?"

Plan B would not work if she got pregnant. It only works before pregnancy.

Update...A few hours after taking the first pill, my girlfriend started having side effects of nausea(sp) and fatigue. If she shows side effects is that a good indication that the pill is working? She was supposed to ovulate today(July 25), I know that can be late or early, but she did take the pill 2 days before the approximate ovulation. Do any of these signs help indicate that the pill is doing its job and we are hopefully safe from pregnancy? If not, are there any things we can be looking for to show that the pill worked other than waiting for her period around the 10th of August? Please help, I'm freaking out!

You won't really be able to tell until you take a pregnancy test.
And unfortunately, you can't take a test until a missed period.

Try to relax, you took plan b and that's the best thing you could have done given the situation.

Update: She took the plan B pill last Tuesday, and now is spotting 1 week later. Is there any way to determine between implantation bleeding and spotting from the pill?

No. You need to relax. Her body is going to be kind of weird for a few months now. The Plan B is a mega dose of hormones and now things will be funky for her.

More likely than not, she isn't pregnant. I hope both of you use this as a big wake up call that all sex should be done protectively because no sex is worth weeks and weeks of worry and fear.

When is her period due? Have her take a pregnancy test then. If it is negative (and it will be), invest in a mondo box of condoms! She can also get birth control pills at planned parenthood really cheaply or possibly even free.

Thanks Ingi! Yes, this is a big wakeup call. We didn't use protection because it was our first time and were caught up in the moment. Since then I have invested in a mondo box of condoms, and am very adament(sp?) about using them every time sex is a possibility. Her period is supposed to be around the 10th of August, and the unprotected sex was on the 22nd of July. Today, the 29, is when the spotting started. Does it help that it is brown, not red? I read that this means the blood could be a day or so old which points to it being the pill and not implantation bleeding. Also, how long does the spotting last if it is implantation bleeding? I read that usually implantation bleeding is only a few drops of blood. Thanks!

She took plan b, so there's really no set amount of blood she'll bleed because it depends on how the hormones affect her. It could be a lot, it could be a little, for a full week, or barely a few days. It's normal, if you want to make sure she needs to take a test.

Has she taken a pregnancy test yet? You said the was technically due on the 10th, so she's good to test now.
