asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 19th, 2009
Ok..about a week ago my daughter had a mild fever for two days it was about 101.5.Then nothing she was fine.Well thursday she started saying im itchy we were in the car.I looked at her and she had all these bumps and her skin was red. They werent raised bumps just surface.Took her to er..then said it looks like a viral infection witch is making a rash. Her ears and throat were fine.I have been giving her benadryl and calamine lotion.Well today i went to pick my hubend up..the air in my car is bad. She started screaming and crying that she itches.I pulled over grabbed her out and the bumps were WORSE her skin bright red.The bumps were EVERYWHERE.I thought it maybe the carseat so i threw it away and bought a new one and washed the backseat but it still happend. When she is home in the air she still gets bumps and itchy but never this bad.I put her in the passenger seat where she could feel the air better about 15 min later the bumps were clearing up.Today she has a runny nose but no fever.I take her to the dr Monday to see whats going on.These bumps come and go but when in the heat get WORSE. Does a viral infection case this type of rash where if in the heat gets worse?I was told it maybe heat rash but she still gets it inside but not as bad when she starts to sweat its alot worse then. Also at night it seems the rash gets worse

Referring to the data you reported (mild fever, temporary rash with bumps, itching) your daughter might be experiencing miliaria, also known as heat rash or sweat rash. It usually appears when the sweat glands in the skin get clogged due to dead epithelial skin cells. The trapped sweat causes the itching and is visible as very small papules (bumps) which might turn into small blisters. The areas of the body which sweats most might be affected by the rash more often.

Once the rash occurs, the child should be taken to the doctor to rule out other possible causes for the rash. Prevention includes avoiding hot and humid air. A cool shower might also prevent the rash in people that are more likely to develop heat rash.

The viral infection that caused the fever might be another condition that is related to the rash only by increasing the body temperature, which in turn caused the rash.

You might want to visit your family doctor for a physical visual examination to confirm if the rash is really miliaria.
