Q: Diagnosing menopause
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 26th, 2009
Four years ago I had surgery. Although I was supposed to have a hysterectomy the physician was unable to remove my uterus because I had excessive scar tissue from a previous surgery. I still have one ovary. After the surgery my period stopped. Although i would spot sometimes, I never had a flow and the spotting was sporadic. This month I had a flow and I saw clots. My FSH tests indicate that I am post menopausal. My previous endometrial biopsies have been okay. Could it be that my period has resumed? Also, my right breast has grown larger than my left breast and it has a rash. Could there be a correlation between the two? Since I still have a uterus and an ovary is it possible for my period to return?

Menopause Answer A7728
You want to know whether your period has resumed after the surgery. Menopause is the time of the woman’s life when menstruation diminishes and ceases usually between the ages of 45 to 50. Menopause is when there has been a year since the last period. Once a woman is in menopause the period can’t be resumed. Bleeding may occur in menopausal women, but it can be either normal due to continuous slow elevation of the female hormones or it can indicate bleeding from tumors, benign or malignant.

According to the data that you described, you may have tumors that bleed. You might consider seeing a gynecologist to rule out any endometrial tumor as well as a breast tumor. You may have a biopsy taken from the endometrial lining and the breast tissue.

I am not able to diagnose medical conditions online. Please contact your doctor or other qualified healthcare provider such as a gynecologist for further diagnosis and treatment options.
