Q: Diagnosing cirrhosis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 16th, 2008
I vomited bright red blood last night, approx 1 cup. its been going on for 2-3 mos (not as much as last night) off and on along with black stools. I was concerned that this could be esopageal varices because I am a heavy drinker. I've never been dx'd with cirrhosis, however have not had any labs done until today for 2-3 yrs. how high are liver enzyes with cirrhosis and when can varices occur with cirrhosis, later or can it happen somewhat early.
i also have a pretty big "beer belly" (? acites) have had it for several years.

In cirrhosis, the aminotransferase levels are moderately higher (over 40 U/liter in men). Esophageal varicose veins usually appear later when cirrhosis is completely manifested.

Ascites is a condition that every doctor should easily recognize. So a gastrointestine specialist might do a physical exam, an ultrasound of the abdomen including an examination of the lower esophagus.
