Q: Diagnosing and treating hand pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 4th, 2009
I'm 23 years old and began having tingling in my right hand during work about 10 months ago which escalated to numbness and tingling all the time. I finally went to the ortho who was was very unhelpful but suggested it was my urnal nerve and scheduled an EMG. The EMG said I had no nerve damage, so the dr. just acted like I was fine and prescribed some anti inflammatories. This was very frustrating and as a grad student it was and is very hard to use my hands. I then quit my repetitive job, started working out a lot more and still wear my wrist brace at night so my arm has gotten better. However, I still cannot do anything repetitive with my hands or arms without discomfort. I also have had a constant pain in right shoulder. I'm hoping to learn something else I can be doing to help this. I don't want to have this for the rest of my life or ever through the rest of grad school (typing not pleasant).

Hand pain can originate from several areas, and is commonly misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). There are a few tests to differentiate the origin of the problem. These tests are very non-invasive and very informative. The fact that you also have shoulder pain may indicate that the problem may originate in your neck (spine or neck muscles). You may consider seeing a chiropractor, as they should be able to not only differentiate where the pain is coming from, but also safe treatment. Good Luck.
