My husband is a new diabetic. He has always loved to eat, but I feel like I am in the dark! I bought several diabetic cookbooks to help me take care of him, but I do not understand the "Exchanges". Can you please explain this to me? Is he allowed a certain amount of meats a day or something? I do not understand. He is a type 2. Thank you so much for your help.

im a type 1 diabetic and to me exchanges are the carbohydrate each 10g carb is 1 exchange so for example a sandwich consisiting of 2 slices of whole meal bread bread and some salad would be 3 exchanges one slice of bread is about 15g carb normally salad is what we call free food doesnt affect your blood sugar.

I am a type 1 diabetic that was diagnosed at 6 years old. I was told by my doctor that 'exchanges' were what are called "total carbohydrates" on food labels.
