Diabetes type 2 and surgical treatment Posted: 05-21-08 07:09am
I dear aunt of mine has diabetes and I
would like very much to help her as much
as I can but I am a little confused. There
are so many options to cope with diabetes
out there. I just heard about Diabetes
Surgery and it seems pretty exciting but I
just simply do not have enough knowledge
to figure out anything.
I found this website http://www.worldcong
ressdiabetessurgery.org and it seems
the leaders in the field will be talking
about it in depth. I would like to
convince her doctor to attend but I am not
sure how to go about it or even if
Diabetes Surgery is as good as it seems.
Could some one give me some advise please?
Thank you in advance.

Surgical treatment of diabetes type-2 is a
new event in medicine. It was found that
by-passing the upper gastrointestinal
tract (stomach, duodenum and jejunum)
leads to diabetes type-2 remission. This
was first observed in diabetic overweight
patients that were treated with gastric
by-pass to reduce the severe obesity.
Decreasing body weight by itself helps in
treating the diabetes type-2 but doctors
noticed that diabetes resolves itself even
before body weight gets back to normal.
Experiments with animals proved that
by-passing the duodenum and jejunum causes
diabetes type-2 remission and reconnection
of the intestines brings back diabetes
type-2. There is still no relevant
explanation how bypassing of the duodenum
and jejunum treats diabetes type-2 and
that’s why there are many skeptics about
the surgical treatment of diabetes type-2.
More scientific researchers are necessary
to explain the etiology of diabetes type-2
and the role of the duodenum and jejunum.
That’s why surgical treatment of
diabetes type-2 is still not recommended
as a routine procedure although positive
results are obvious. Long term
consequences (nutrient deficiencies) from
by-passing are another problem that
requires critical evaluation.
For now, severely obese patients are
candidates for surgical treatment of
diabetes but in the near future less-obese
or non-obese diabetic patients will be
also treated surgically.
If your aunt is obese she can try it.
