I am 19 years old, and just recently become sexually active with my boyfriend, we used protects and have both been tested, so all is good there. Okay... a week ago I got my depo Provera shot... and since then I have been hungry all of the time and have had cravings for anything sweet, saly, greasy, you name it, I've craved it... I also have been feelings nausiated at times... I am having terrible aches in my legs and arms... the worst of all, sex has become so painful during and after that I actually cried (Only had sex once since the shot, because I can't even think about sex anymore) I read I am not alone in this, but I don't understand what in Depo causes this.... It's been only a week and I already feel terrible... I know the Depo Provera can take the next three months plus at least 6 months afterwards to leave my system (I don't plan on getting the second shot).... Is there anything I can do while I wait to off set these sypmtoms, and the painful intercourse??? I am worried more negative side effects will follow. Last night I couldn't stop crying for no reason, and I feel tired all the time now, and I don't care to do anything. What are my options in dealing with this?

Yep side effects from the shot. Some people it is just bad! I loved the shot but was starting to have problems like that and had to stop (I was on for just about 3 years with no problems before that). But my Dr explained to me sometimes the Depo (or other bc's) can make your body think its' pregnant so you get all these weird symptoms. I don't know if there is much you can do for the symtoms right now, but I would suggest KY for intercourse and the other stuff if it gets much worse go in to the Dr and let them know what is going on and maybe they can help you out. Good luck and hope you are doing better!

I am just worried that KY will irritate it more... also because I have noticed swelling in the vaginal area as well. I almost seem to have to symptoms of Vaginitis... could depo provera induce that? and will it go away on its own after stopping depo provera?

You can get irritated from having intercourse and there not be enough lubrication. I had this while on the depo the only thing that would help was using KY. I don't think the shot would induce Vaginitis?! But like I said before you need to talk to your Dr about allt this going on. They are the only ones who can tell you what is going and help fix it.

hmm yeah I called my Gyn, and at first he said he hadn't heard of the depo causing this at all... and then he said he'd call me back and so on that call he said that this could be from my hormons reacting to the shot... I was like okay, well what can I do? and they said they'd call me back again... so finally third time, he says oh it isn't the shot at all, you probably have a yeast infection ((Though only three days prior to these symptoms when I got the shot I also got a pap which came back clear...))
Sooo i dont know... seems to me he can't make up his mind... but he said if Monistat doesn't clear it up then I need to come in... So I'm totally confused now lol....
I'm just going to get some KY lol...

you should get a 2nd opinion from another doctor becuz he sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. I had similar symptoms just like you and I KNOW it was from the depo becuz i didn't have them before and I didn't have them after I got off. What works best for me is the natural personal lubricant. It sorta feels like the same thing as if it was your own. I got mine at LoveWorks! There are a lot of different brands and I got the cheap brand and I'm sure it works just as good at the expensive brands.

IMO...i would get off the shot and just take regular pills. If u plan on having children in the future the depo will make it hard for you to get pregnant. There are also other options besides the pills that you can also consider if bc is not right for you.

Yeah I would treat for a yeast infection if that is what they think but I would get the lubricant too! If your still having problems I would talk to a Dr about switching once this shot is done. If not then go a head and stay on it's wonderful not having to remember and usually not having a period! I know people talk about not being able to get pregnant but I will tell you I got pregnant with in 3 months of being off the shot and I was on another bc pill as well. So yes you can it just depends on your body and how fast it gets out of your system completly because it can take awhile. Good luck and hope your doing better!! Smile

Depo
I've been on the Depro for 8 years now and yes there is a lubricant problem with irritation and yes there are heavy periods that normally end within 2-3 months. But I've just heard that it messes up your bones and that's got me real concerned cause as of a few months ago I noticed it's difficult to get up after squatting...Silly me I thought it was my age 38 and not enough exercise, but now it's a real concern to me. The best thing to do is change methods.

got off shot and back on- getting off
i am 35, i started the shot 2 years ago and loved it i thought. i had been on bc since i was 16 because of heavy periods, and my ex complained our sex life was not good, so i thought it was the hormones, i finally settled on the shot, i loved it, no periods, little cramping at at that time of the month, but nothing big. well we got divorced a year ago, i got a shot right as he left in feb. 08 and did not repeat the next, i had no use for sex or interest, after it got out of my system i felt amazing and wanted to be with someone, it took about 6months to a year, i thought it was just from the divorce and a new life, well i started the shot back in march and i feel like crap, my body hurts, my head hurts (had not had a headache in forever)and i kind of lost my desire,my period is jacked up and i cramp all the time, no moisture, my neck and my moods are bad really bad, which i didn't feel this way as much the first time ,but i notice stuff i didn't before that must of been connected to the shot. before i restarted the shot i felt like i was 20 something again with no kids, lol. the only thing that has changed in the last 2 months is the shot. so i would run from this and i will not be going back for my shot and hope its gone out of my system soon.. i would rather deal with my period and know what i can count on.

new to shot
i just had my first depro shot a week ago and so far no bad side effects. the only thing i notice is that i was supposed to start my period now and it is late. I had a pregnancy test before i had my shot and it was negative. can the shots make your normally on time periods late that quick after recieving one.

depo provera
stop the shot its horrible it screws you up
sex becomes more of a hassle and you bleed at the most inconvinent times. you are depressed and moody and it makes you gain a ton of weight. i stopped depo last month and i have been fine im trying to get my periods back to normal and if you want to try to get pregnant you have to wait like a year so i would go with something else
