My mother aged 54, suffers from depression. There is no apparent cause for her to be depressed as all is well in my family. My sister and I are well settled. My father is in great health and has a good job. Early symptoms of depression started showing up about three years back. Sessions with the counselor have not helped much. She has been on anti-depressant drugs for quite sometime now. However, I wish there could be some way out to assist her to regain her enthusiasm for life.

For some horrible reason women get this in the back of their mind that life ends after Menopause...They live in so much dread of this happening and I believe that we prepare ourselves to just plain "die out" after this age...It isn't true, but the books on life and memories of our Mother's words, help this along...I know, I had a Mother like this...

I could say a lot of words on this, but would she believe me...She must know that a woman of her age and older can be wonderful...My life is glorious...She sounds like she has a wonderful husband who can help her...It is believing that your life is not over that is important...

I will write more on Menopause under the Topic when I have time...I will add it at this Forum too...It is a good post...It is very important and I should have done it earlier...I think I will call it "The Empowerment of Women: Menopause" or something like that...She doesn't know it, but she has only just begun...

Life in my opinion, begins on the other side of Menopause...Here you enter a new happening as a woman...I have guests this weekend and will not be online, but will try and have it on by Monday....

I send you my love,
Caroline

I was going to do a post on Menopause, but these would just be my thoughts so I thought it best to leave it alone...However, I would suggest this:

I believe the best way you can help your Mother, is to get your Father to take her back to her yesterdays....I mean take her back to youth...A second honeymoon...Show her that she is still alive...Find the kid in herself...Stop thinking...Just plain stop all the pondering in her mind that is getting her into a mess...Women do this...They practice thinking of what they can worry about next....

She must be made to believe that life is so wonderful...Find all the love that she used to have...Do crazy thing...Believe she is young...I sailed through this because I didn't believe that it was going to bother me...My hair got thicker and it still is...I didn't know what other women knew so it didn't hurt me...This may sound stupid, but it was and is my secret to the fountain of youth...

This would be my best advice to your family....When you feel young, you are young...

I wish you well...

ive been depressed a long time. i seen a therapist & it was so hard to understand her thick accent. i felt like she couldnt relate to me.
i also have taken prozac which made me a zombie for a few weeks, then it lost its effect. antidepressant medication doesnt raise your serotonin levels(effects your happy mood). you should research herbal remedies like st.johns worth or SamE.
You can eat certain foods to raise your levels.
the doctor on this site also suggest you keep your colon cleaned.
