I am in a monogomous relationship and am considering going on birth control - either the pill or nuva ring. I have tried a few pills before and have felt terrible with all of them. About 4 years ago, my doctor prescribed Mircette because it was one of the lowest doses of estrogen and I had TERRIBLE headaches and my breasts got HUGE! I went from a smaller C to a large D. It turns out the headaches were probably not from the BC and were probably related to a car accident that occurred at nearly the same time(I finally ended up going to several chiropractors which finally helped..). However, nonetheless, it still scared me for a long time! These were not your average headaches - I was practically dysfuntional and I am scared that there is a very small chance it was a crazy reaction to mircette.

Anyways, more recently I have tried Yaz and Femcon and felt like crap on both of them. I stuck it out and tried each of them for a good 2-3 months to see if they subsided. I can handle the physical effects (breasts got very sore and large again, but no nausea or headaches this time). However,I was a WRECK emotionally. Yaz was the worst and ironically, my gyno prescribed that one because it helps with PMDD, yet it made me the most anxious. I struggle with anxiety as it is and have now been taking a small dose of paxil (10mg) and my quality of life is much better. I have not tried a birth control pill since I started paxil in June 2008 because I had no reason for it. However, I also dont want to stay on paxil forever just to combat birth control symptoms. I hope to get off of paxil at some point - I have been exercising alot and trying other methods to control anxiety.

My gyno reccommends nuva ring, but several posts say that depression was a bad effect on this one. The whole concept of the ring is strange to me as well. I also dont like how it is still relatively new and that there are some crazy stories out there about it. I don't mind taking a pill everyday, I would only choose the nuva ring over the pill because it has less hormones overall.

My other option would probably be ortho lo - I haven't tried this one yet, but my sister does well with it, so I'm thinking maybe we have similar body chemistry and it would work well with me too.

I have done some research and know that many combination bc's have differing amounts and ratios of progesterone and estrogen... which one is more likely to cause depressed mood/anxiety? a higher estrogen or progesterone? some say they are even more depressed on the low dose hormones. I have even considered going on a progesterone only (which are not quite as effective) and always using condoms to avoid estrogen (if that is the problem!)

Other than managing my anxiety, I am a healthy individual and in pretty good shape/exercise often. I am not overly worried about weight gain because I dont tend to have a problem with that. I weigh about 145 lbs at 5'11''

Any advice at all is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Smile
